What art suits a boutique hotel, space by space?
Quiet originals above the beds, one strong piece in the bar or dining room, texture at reception and a vertical series on the stairs: four kinds of wall, each with its own job.
A boutique hotel sells character, and guests notice the art where they stop: at the reception desk, at the bar, from the bed. Start from those walls rather than from the catalogue, and choose for each kind of space in turn.
-
IA#1136 Guest rooms
Landscapes, seascapes, botanicals and soft abstracts in peaceful palettes, chosen to sit with the headboard, the bedding and the lamps. Two squares hang well over twin beds.
Art for guest rooms -
WA#095 Bar and dining room
The piece guests photograph: larger than the rest and moodier, often a still life or a dark floral, with a run of smaller canvases along the banquette.
Art for restaurants and bars -
TA#056 Reception
Texture reads from the door: plaster relief, knife-laid florals, or one panoramic canvas the width of the desk wall.
Art for lobbies and reception -
IA#1198 Stairs and corridors
Tall, narrow verticals in one style, so a staircase or a corridor reads as a series rather than a set of leftovers.
Art for corridors
Can I order one sample painting before ordering for every room?
Yes. The minimum order is one piece, so a sample is simply a one-piece order.
Choose the work you want in your first finished room, tell us the size and the finish, and we quote it. You follow the painting in photos or video at each stage, then hang it in the room with the bedding, the paint colour and the lamps in place, and decide.
When you go ahead, the approved sample becomes the reference for the rest of the order, and the photos of every later piece are checked against the one already on your wall. If the sample turns out wrong for the room, you have spent one painting finding out, not forty.
How do you make every room's art different but related?
Keep the bedrooms inside one or two styles and let the subjects change: forty different paintings in the same manner read as a collection, not a mix.
The catalogue holds some 1,300 works, so a 60-room hotel can give every room its own painting without leaving one style: Impressionist landscapes on the guest floors, say, and Wabi-Sabi abstracts in the garden rooms. Where rooms should rhyme rather than differ, such as a floor of suites or the two sides of a landing, the Vary route paints a small series from one catalogue piece, so two or four canvases belong together without repeating.
Every piece is painted for its order, nothing is printed and nothing waits in stock, so the size follows each wall: the catalogue sizes are a starting point, not a menu. Browse the Impressionist, Wabi-Sabi and Textured collections to find the manner you want.
Can hotel artwork be recoloured to match our interior scheme?
Yes. The Recolour route keeps the composition of a catalogue work and paints it in your palette.
Send what you already hold: paint codes, a headboard fabric or a curtain cutting photographed in daylight next to a sheet of white paper, a stone or timber sample, or the scheme board. The colours are mixed to those references and you check the match in the photos at each stage, so a correction is made on the easel, not after the canvas has travelled.
Two practical notes. A phone screen and a canvas under your room lighting never look quite the same, which is one more reason the sample room comes first. And hand-painted pieces vary slightly from one room to the next; on an independent property that is part of the point. To find a starting point, browse by colour, from beige and cream to green, teal and blue.
We have no interior designer. How do we choose 20 or 60 paintings?
Two ways, depending on your budget and your brief: choose from the catalogue's ready designs, with a shortlist from us, or have the art designed for your hotel.
From ready designs. Send a photo of a typical room, the room count and one word for the mood you want, such as calm, warm or moody, and we reply with a shortlist of catalogue works for those rooms. A photo taken with the bed made and the lamps on tells us the rest.
Designed for your hotel. If the property should have art of its own, such as a series built around its palette, its town or its story, we design it with you from your brief, and you approve a sketch or a sample before the rest is painted. How far that goes depends on the project's budget and needs, and we talk it through with you before quoting.
Either way, keep the bedrooms to one or two styles, and let the sample on the wall, not the thumbnail on the screen, make the final decision.
How much does boutique hotel art cost?
It depends on the sizes, finishes and number of pieces, so we price each hotel's order individually. Send us your rooms and you will usually have a full quote within one business day.
- Size
- The price follows the canvas area.
- Surface
- Thick knife-laid texture and plaster relief take more paint and drying time than flat brushwork.
- Finish
- Rolled costs least, stretched more, framed the most.
- Quantity
- Volume pricing from 10 pieces, counted across the whole order: bedrooms, bar and reception together.
- Shipping
- Quoted separately. We find the best route for your address and order and confirm the cost before anything ships.
For a first budget, send the room count and the sizes you have in mind. We price every piece separately, so you can see where a smaller size or a rolled finish keeps the budget on track, and we are glad to suggest where to save.
How does an order run before a reopening date?
Plan back from the day the rooms must be dressed: order the sample as soon as the closure dates are fixed, and the rest once the sample is approved.
Send the quantity and the reopening date with your enquiry, and the quote states the delivery date for the whole order.
- Send the briefRoom count, wall photos, sizes, finish and any palette references, on WhatsApp, with the quote form or by email.
- Quote in one business dayA price and a delivery date for each piece. Painting starts once you accept and pay 50% against the proforma invoice.
- The sample roomIf you want one, it is painted, approved, shipped and hung before the rest of the order is painted.
- Painted in stagesPhotos or video at each stage; the painter continues only after you approve.
- Final photographYou approve a photograph of each finished piece; the remaining 50% is paid and it is packed.
- ShippedWe book DHL, FedEx or UPS express on the best route for your address, confirm the cost before dispatch and send the tracking number.
Rolled, stretched or framed: which should a hotel order?
Weigh three things: shipping cost, delivery time and the work on site. Rolled canvas is the cheapest and quickest to ship; framed arrives ready to hang but is the bulkiest to send; and heavily textured paintings travel stretched or framed only.
-
Rolled
- Shipping cost
- The lowest: a light tube, a fraction of the size of a framed box
- Delivery
- The fastest: no stretching or framing before dispatch, and the tube travels as an ordinary express parcel
- On site
- Your framer stretches and frames it, which adds a few days and the framer's fee
- Best for
- Guest-room runs, large orders and hotels with a framer they trust
-
Stretched
- Shipping cost
- Higher: a flat box the full size of the canvas
- Delivery
- Close behind rolled: the canvas is mounted on its stretcher, then boxed
- On site
- Hang it straight from the box
- Best for
- Dining rooms and corridors, where a clean frameless edge suits the wall
-
Framed
- Shipping cost
- The highest: the largest and heaviest box, with corner protection
- Delivery
- The slowest: framing adds a step, and a large framed piece may need freight rather than express
- On site
- Hang it the day the box opens; hooks come with it. Gold, silver, black, white or wood
- Best for
- The bar, reception and suites, when nobody on site has time to frame
Heavy texture cannot be rolled
Thick palette-knife paint, plaster relief and 3D texture would crack in a tube, so these pieces travel stretched or framed. If shipping cost matters more than depth, the texture can be built thinner so the canvas rolls; we agree that with you before painting.
Mix finishes in one order
Rolled for the guest-room run your framer handles, framed for the bar and reception pieces you want ready on the day: one order, with each piece in the finish that suits it.
Not sure which to choose?
Send your address, the sizes and whether you have a framer, and we help you weigh shipping cost against delivery time for each finish before you decide.
Does the same work for members' clubs and pubs with rooms?
Yes, with two differences: the walls should look collected over time rather than bought as one lot, and rooms often open in stages.
Salon walls. Size and frame are chosen per piece, so one order can mix small portraits in gold with larger landscapes in wood and a square in black, hung close together. Figurative, animal and still-life subjects suit a lounge or a library: see figurative, animal and still-life works.
Rooms that open later. Pieces can be ordered a few at a time, so the library can be dressed this year and the new bedrooms next year from the same reference codes, in the same palette or a shifted one.

Boutique hotel art: questions owners ask
Is the art hand-painted or printed?
Hand-painted. Every piece is painted by hand in acrylic on canvas, or in oil on request; nothing is printed, and nothing is painted over a print. The photos or video you approve at each stage show the canvas being painted.
What size painting goes above a hotel bed?
As a rule of thumb, about two-thirds of the headboard's width, hung with its lower edge 20–30 cm above the headboard. Over a 160 cm bed that means a canvas around 100–120 cm wide, or two squares side by side; over twin beds, one square above each. Any size can be painted, so send the headboard width and the ceiling height and we suggest one.
Can you paint our own view, building or crest for the rooms?
Yes. Send a photo of the view from the terrace, the façade, the town or your crest, and it is painted by hand on canvas for reception or for a run of rooms. See paintings from your own image.
Can we add rooms later and match the first order?
Yes. Rooms added next year are ordered from the same reference codes and painted against the approved sample, in the same palette or a shifted one.
Can we return a painting if it does not suit the room?
Because you see and approve a photograph of every finished piece before it ships, approved pieces are final and are not returned. That is exactly why we suggest starting with one sample room: one painting on your own wall answers the question before the rest is painted.
What happens if a painting arrives damaged?
It is rare: careful packing and trusted carriers keep our return rate under 0.01%. If it happens, send photos; we take the claim up with the carrier and work out a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund.
Do you lease or rent hotel art?
No. Every piece is sold outright, so the art is the hotel's to keep, with no rental contract or rotation schedule to manage.
Should a boutique hotel commission local artists instead?
They suit different jobs. A local artist is right for one or two pieces tied to the town. For twenty or sixty rooms, one supplier gives each room its own hand-painted original on one delivery date, checked stage by stage in photos. Many hotels do both.
