The Qatar wall art guide, page by page

Each page answers one buying question for Qatar: villas and the majlis, hotels, offices, taste, sizes, where to buy, and Doha district by district.

What wall art suits a majlis in a Qatari home?

A wide, calm piece or a set of panels above the seating, hung for seated guests: abstract, geometric, landscape or calligraphy-led work in the room's own stone and fabric tones, rather than figures.

Every Qatari house has a majlis, the room where the host receives guests without disturbing the family, and larger villas have more than one: a Diplomatic Area villa for sale in 2026 lists an interior majlis and a separate external one. Seating runs along the walls, so the painting belongs above the cushions, and guests see it sitting down. Over a long seating run, a panoramic canvas of two to three metres, or two or three panels hung as one, holds the wall better than a single picture in the middle.

The rooms are growing. Since June 2026 a detached majlis may stand 7.5 to 10 metres tall, with a mezzanine covering up to 80% of its floor: there, the seating wall takes the wide piece and the end wall a tall one rising towards the gallery. The traditional majlis was dressed like a dark-brown Bedouin tent with thin white lines, and modern ones keep muted palettes and geometric wall panels, so earth tones, geometry and texture feel at home. Figurative painting was historically rare in Qatar, where calligraphy and textiles were valued more; keep portraits for the family's private rooms. Room by room, see villas and the majlis in Qatar.

Which walls in a Qatari villa need art first?

The guest side first, the entrance hall, the majlis and the formal reception, then the family lounges, the dining wall and each family suite, in one palette so the house reads as a set.

Qatari villas are planned for large families and many guests. One 1,120 m² villa in the Diplomatic Area lists three family lounges, an interior majlis, an external majlis and nine master bedrooms. In a study of middle-class Qatari villas, the largest space in one house was the entry hall, ten metres by five, with the men's majlis right beside it. That hall is the first wall a guest sees and often the tallest: a vertical canvas of two metres or more, or a stacked pair.

The rules keep making room for more. The June 2026 amendments raise the villa height limit to 16 metres, and an earlier change doubled the rooftop floor a villa may build, which gives many houses a penthouse lounge. Plan the art as one order: one palette for the guest side, something more personal for each family lounge, and a free choice for each suite. Ten pieces or more reach volume pricing, and every wall still gets its own size. See how a schedule comes together on whole-villa art projects.

What wall art suits an apartment on The Pearl, in Lusail or in Msheireb?

One or two well-sized canvases rather than a set: about 100–150 cm over the sofa, a calm piece in the bedroom, and a tall one wherever a duplex opens to double height.

Apartments in Qatar are generous, and there are many of them. The Pearl alone has some 25,000 homes for 52,000 residents; two-bedrooms in Msheireb's Wadi 1 run 143–180 m²; and Lusail plans 9,200 apartments in Fox Hills, where one new building offers duplexes with double-height spaces and floor-to-ceiling glass. A sofa wall of four or five metres takes a canvas about 100–150 cm wide, or a pair; a double-height void takes a vertical piece of two metres or more.

Let the view set the palette. Facing the marina or the sea, a seascape or a soft abstract in blue and sand carries the water indoors; an inland room can take warmer colour. If you rent, a good canvas moves with you to the next flat, and one piece is a perfectly good order. The districts are compared on Doha, district by district.

Which colours and subjects suit wall art in Qatar?

Stone, sand and soft white with one accent, texture rather than loud colour, and subjects from the desert, the sea and Qatari heritage; the Sadu weave and the national maroon give a palette that reads as Qatari.

New Qatari homes are light and quiet. A Doha fit-out guide describes beige limestone floors, soft white walls and natural wood, and one Doha collector kept his house mostly off-white so the architecture frames his paintings instead of competing with them. Against walls like these, texture does more than bright colour: carved plaster and palette-knife relief catch the light in a way a print cannot.

When a room should read as Qatari, two palettes are close at hand: Al Sadu, the Bedouin weave of narrow bands in black, white, brown, beige and red, whose UNESCO listing Qatar joined in 2025, and the national maroon, fixed by the government in 2012, best used as an accent. Subjects come from the land and the sea. Public art across Qatar celebrates dugongs, pearl-diving songs, dunes and tents; metro murals show falcons, camels and geometric patterns; and Qatari painters' solo shows at Katara in early 2026 were led by heritage and memory. • Figures in private rooms

Portraits and figures are a household's own choice for private rooms; for the majlis and the reception, choose abstraction, landscape, geometry or calligraphy.

  • Nothing provocative in public space

For a hotel, office or clinic, leave nudity and anything provocative out of the brief from the start: in 2013 a sculpture on the Corniche was taken down after objections, 26 days after it went up.

How do you have a verse, a view or a family photograph painted?

Send us the image, a calligrapher's artwork, a photo of your view, your falcon or your company crest, with the wall size; we tell you the size, format and finish it will paint best at, and paint it once you are happy.

Calligraphy runs deep on Qatari walls. The Qatari calligrapher Fatma Al Sharshani, who trained at the Museum of Islamic Art, painted a circular public mural drawn from the poetry of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, and Doha guides to dressing the home for Eid suggest a calligraphy greeting on the wall. For a verse, a name or a motto, begin with a calligrapher's own artwork, used with their permission, so the letterforms are right before any paint goes on, and ask a native reader to check the stage photographs before you approve the last one.

The same route works for the West Bay towers seen from your balcony, your villa, a family picture, your falcon or horse, or your company's logo or crest. You need to own the image or have permission to use it, and a design can be kept exclusive to you if you ask before we start. More on paintings from your own image.

Where can you see and buy wall art in Qatar, and when is commissioning the answer?

See it in the museums and at the fairs, buy small ready-made pieces in the home stores and named artists in the galleries, and commission once the wall needs more than about 1.5 metres of canvas, your own palette or a set that belongs together.

Qatar's art life is led by its museums. Mathaf holds about 10,000 works of modern Arab art, the Fire Station runs studios and residencies for artists, and Art Basel Qatar opened in February 2026 with 87 galleries, more than half of its artists from Southwest Asia and North Africa. Buying is thinner: Qatar Museums' deputy chief executive said in January 2026 that the country still needs a stronger commercial art sector.

So the shops split into tiers that rarely meet. The home and furniture chains sell printed and framed pieces, mostly 1.2 metres or less on the long side. An online marketplace sells originals by artists living in Qatar, most smaller than a square metre and only a handful reaching two metres. Galleries on The Pearl and at Katara show named artists at the size the artist chose, priced on request. Hence our rule of thumb: a wall that needs more than about 1.5 metres of canvas, a palette matched to your stone or velvet, or pieces that belong together is a commission, whoever paints it. Each kind of seller is compared on where to buy art in Qatar.

What do Qatar's hotels hang, and where does made-to-order fit?

Work by Qatari and regional artists in the public rooms, and calm, place-specific series through the corridors and guest rooms; with few new hotels being built, much of the work now is refreshing rooms already open.

Doha's newest hotels treat art as part of the building. The Ned Doha hangs more than 350 works by 95 artists, 61 of them based in Doha, and 60 of the pieces were commissioned; Rosewood Doha placed commissioned work by Qatari artists, abstract desert light and coastal photography, through its suites, residences and public spaces; and Swissôtel Corniche Park Towers took about 8,000 artworks for its rooms, corridors and public areas, drawing on Sadu weaving.

Building has slowed: Qatar had 11 hotel projects and 2,170 rooms in the pipeline at the end of 2025, against 42,131 hotel and serviced-apartment keys already open by mid-2026. Much of the work ahead is refreshing what exists, room type by room type, within each property's story. A regional artist's piece suits the lobby; the corridors and guest rooms need series painted in one hand to the designer's drawings, sizes and palette, which is what we paint, with one sample first if you want it. Scale by space is on hotels and restaurants in Qatar.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

What art do offices in Doha and Lusail commission?

Mostly abstract canvases that suit the interior and say something about the company, sized for lobbies that can rise 15 metres, with a Qatari artist's piece where visitors gather.

Head offices are on the move. Qatar Airways is moving its headquarters to four interconnected towers in Msheireb Downtown Doha, Qatar Tourism is following it there, and Lusail Towers are anchored by QNB, Qatar Central Bank, the Qatar Investment Authority and Qatari Diar. Each move brings receptions, boardrooms and corridors to fill, sometimes at great height: the staff entrances of Qatar Petroleum's West Bay offices open into 15-metre lobbies, with local artists commissioned for the lobbies and the CEO suite.

Briefs tend to be practical. When a logistics group commissioned 29 canvases for its regional centre in Qatar, most had to be abstract, complementing the interior and reflecting the company's culture. Hospitals hang art too: Sidra Medicine holds more than sixty works, chosen to make the hospital feel more human. A sensible split for a new floor is one piece by a Qatari or regional artist for the wall visitors photograph, then canvases painted to the reception, boardroom and corridor walls in the same palette. How does a buyer in Qatar order a painting from iHomeArt?

On WhatsApp: send the wall, approve every stage from photographs, and choose rolled, stretched or framed to suit how the piece travels and where it hangs.

WhatsApp is the most used platform among Qatari nationals, and it is the quickest way to reach us too. Start with a photo of the wall, its width and the ceiling height; your quote, priced for your sizes and finishes, usually arrives within one business day, with a shortlist from the catalogue or a proposal for a piece designed for you. We send photographs or video at each stage, and the next stage starts only when you say yes.

Larger orders may go by air or sea freight, on the route we find best for your address, with the shipping cost confirmed before dispatch. Building a villa? Bring the art into the plan early: a full fit-out can take six to nine months from design to furniture.

Qatar wall art FAQs

How long does a painting take to reach Doha, Lusail or Al Wakrah?

About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Doha, Lusail, Al Wakrah, Al Khor or any other address in Qatar. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.

What is the largest painting you can make for a majlis or a double-height hall?

Send us a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and how the piece will reach the room, by door, stair or lift.

Can I order one painting first before a set for a villa or hotel?

Yes. The minimum order is one piece, so a sample is simply a first order: we paint one canvas, you approve it, and the rest of the set follows in the same hand and palette. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces, which suits a whole villa, an office floor or a run of hotel rooms.

Can you match the colours of my majlis fabric, carpet or marble?

Yes. Photograph the fabric, carpet, stone or wall paint in daylight, ideally beside a sheet of white paper, and send the pictures with your brief; the palette is mixed to them. You see the colours on the canvas in the stage photographs and approve them before the next stage begins.

How do I pay for a painting ordered from Qatar?

Half upfront against a proforma invoice, so painting can start, and the other half once you approve the photograph of the finished piece, before it ships. Your quote usually arrives within one business day of your message on WhatsApp, through the quote form or by email, and we are glad to suggest where a size or finish could save.

What happens if a painting arrives damaged, or does not suit the room?

Transit damage is rare, under 0.01% of pieces; if it happens, send us photos and we take it up with the carrier and agree a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund. Because each piece is painted to order and you approve a photograph of the finished canvas before it ships, finished pieces are not returnable.

When is the best time to see art in Doha before commissioning?

Art Basel Qatar returns on 28–30 January 2027, and the Qatar International Art Festival is planned at Katara for 7–12 December 2026. Between fairs, Mathaf's modern Arab collection and the Fire Station's exhibitions are open through the year: a good way to find the mood you want before you commission the size you need.

Can you paint a calligraphy piece in time for Ramadan or Eid?

Yes, if you start early. Painting takes about 10 days and express delivery 5–7 days, and a verse needs time before that: the calligrapher's artwork, your approval of the layout and a native reader's check of the stage photographs. Send the artwork and the wall size at least a month ahead so no approval is rushed.
