About this painting

A river of amber and gold cuts diagonally through a white field, from the top right corner down to a dark chocolate-brown pool at the lower left, flanked on both sides by marbled swirls of dove and charcoal grey.

The paint was poured and left to flow rather than brushed, so the greys break into lacy cells and feathered fringes where the layers pushed into each other, and fine gold threads branch off the main stream. Generous areas of clean white are kept at the upper left and lower right, which stops a busy centre from crowding the edges.

Where does the lacy grey pattern in AA#450 come from?

From how the paint behaved, not from build-up. When grey, white and gold are poured together, lighter paint pushes up through darker paint and opens into small cells and feathered fringes. It looks intricate up close while the surface itself stays level.

Why is the lower left corner of AA#450 so dark?
