About this painting

Ribbons of gold, copper, black and dove grey spring from a narrow knot near the bottom right and fan upward across the canvas like a sheaf of long leaves. On the left they thin into hairline strokes that curl away over a bare off-white ground.

The paint is blended smooth, and each band darkens gradually from one edge to the other, so it seems to twist as it rises. Gold carries the centre-right, black follows the inner curves, and one thin blush-pink streak at the right edge warms the greys. The lower left stays almost empty, which keeps all the movement pointing up.
