Where does a painting go in a Haussmann apartment?
Rarely over the fireplace, which usually carries a mirror: on the walls either side of it, on the long wall facing the windows, and as one tall canvas at the end of the enfilade.
In a Haussmann apartment the plan decides the hang before taste does. The salon's marble fireplace sits in the middle of the main wall, almost always under a mirrored trumeau, so the painting belongs on the walls that flank it or on the long wall opposite the windows. The reception rooms run in enfilade along the street; with the double doors open, the view through them reaches 15 to 20 metres, which makes the far wall of the suite the place for one tall canvas that still reads from the first room. Many owners now take those doors out: one Paris architect merged salon and dining room in nearly two-thirds of recent renovations, leaving a long double réception wide enough for a panoramic canvas or a pair.
Then check the floor, because ceilings drop as you climb the stairs:
| Where you live | Ceiling | A canvas that holds the wall |
|---|---|---|
| Second floor, the étage noble | 3.20 m | Verticals of 120–180 cm, 150–200 cm wide over a sofa, up to 250 cm tall at the end of the enfilade |
| Third and fourth floors | 2.90–3.10 m | Verticals of 100–150 cm, 140–180 cm wide over a sofa |
| Fifth floor and under the roof | 2.60–2.80 m | Up to about 120 cm tall, or a pair |
| Post-war and new flats | About 2.50 m | 100–130 cm tall at most, or a long horizontal over the sofa |

What suits a Riviera villa when most of its walls are glass?
Give the one or two solid walls a panoramic canvas of two to three metres or a matched pair, in a matte or textured finish and the colours the sea already supplies.
On the Côte d'Azur the architecture leaves the painting little room. Contemporary villas open to the view through wide bay windows: one architect's villa above Monaco slides its glazing under raw-concrete overhangs. The houses are large, too, from 250 m² to a 700 m² estate on one Cap d'Antibes agency's list, so the usual result is a big living room with one solid inland wall, seen from across the room: a canvas of 2 to 3 metres, or two panels hung as one, holds it where a standard size would look lost.
Light is the second constraint. Opposite the glazing a glossy surface throws back the glare; a matte surface or a palette-knife texture reads in any light. Interiors tend to stay calm and let the view bring the colour: a 2026 feature on a villa on the Monaco border describes a quiet palette that echoes the shifting azure outside. White, sand, sea blue and olive suit that register, as does abstraction that suggests water and rock without copying the view. Monaco is mostly apartments: about 78% of its 2024 resales were studios to two-bedroom flats, walls for one well-chosen canvas rather than a panorama. More on the Riviera and Monaco.
Which wall art suits French interiors in 2026?
Two registers live side by side: landscape, still life and flowers in period rooms, and calm abstraction in warm earth tones in contemporary ones, usually as one large piece rather than a cluster of small frames.
French taste keeps one foot in the museum. Asked to choose favourites from a list, French people put Leonardo da Vinci, Van Gogh and Monet first, and as many are drawn to the art of 1500–1900 (23%) as to art made since 1960 (25%). Landscape, still life and botanical subjects sit naturally under a Haussmann cornice, in a gilded or dark wood frame, or stretched without one for contrast with the mouldings.
The contemporary register has warmed. A French property site reports clay red, powder pink, ochre, caramel, deep browns and carmine taking over from beige in 2026, and a décor magazine finds many interior architects now prefer one large work to an accumulation of small frames. For a renovated double réception or a new-build flat, that points to a single generous abstract in terracotta, ochre or sand, often with relief in the paint; bedrooms take the quieter end of the range, in dusty rose, blue-grey or celadon. At home, the subject is yours to choose; for an office or a public building, leave devotional imagery out of the brief: French law keeps the state neutral in religion and lets companies adopt a neutrality rule. Subjects and palettes in detail are on French taste and styles.

Can you have a Monet or a Van Gogh painted by hand for your wall?
Yes: a painting long out of copyright, such as a Monet water garden or a Van Gogh orchard, can be painted by hand at the size your wall needs; a work still in copyright needs the rights holder's permission first.
Reproductions are an ordinary choice in France: 30% of French people own one, almost as many as own an original artwork (32%). A copy painted by hand differs from a print where it counts on a wall: the brushwork is real, and the size is yours. A canvas that hangs at a modest size in a museum can be painted tall for the end of an enfilade, or recomposed as a panoramic for a long dining wall. Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne are long out of copyright; a twentieth-century painter such as Picasso is not, and we need the rights holder's permission before painting his work.
Your own image works the same way: the stone farmhouse in the Luberon, the view from a balcony in Nice, a family photograph, or your company's logo or crest. Send it with the wall size and we tell you how it will translate to canvas, at what size and in which finish. You need to own the image or have permission to use it, and a design can be kept exclusive to you if you ask before we start. More on paintings from your own image.
Gallery, artist or made to order: which suits your wall?
A gallery or the artist when you want that artist's work; made to order when the wall needs a size, a palette or a matching set that no one has in stock.
France buys its originals close to the source. Among French people who have bought an original work, half bought directly from the artist and 38% in a gallery, and in the Paris area 43% of buyers have used a gallery. The professional tier sits in the capital: 81% of the galleries in the national gallery association are based in Île-de-France, and Art Paris drew a record 87,275 visitors to the Grand Palais in April 2026. In Lyon, Bordeaux or the countryside the choice narrows to local artists, touring salons and home stores; art3f, a salon for buying direct from artists, comes to Bordeaux in December 2026.
Time is part of the choice: one French realist painter warns of six to ten months for a large commission. Seller by seller, with the sizes each one stocks, see where to buy art in France.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

What wall art do companies in France hang in their offices?
Original work with a story the company can tell: a theme or an emblem for the reception, then one palette carried through the corridors and meeting rooms, usually chosen when the firm moves.
French companies that collect hang art where staff and visitors pass. Société Générale's collection hung in the corridors, landings, meeting rooms, trading floors and staff restaurants of its La Défense towers. The Colas foundation has commissioned paintings on a single theme, the road, since 1991, some 15 a year by a 2016 count, showing them at headquarters before sending them on to the group's subsidiaries. A theme is what makes a collection read as one, and smaller firms borrow the idea: one coworking operator gives its sites their own protective animal, a butterfly at Montparnasse, a lion at Gare de Lyon.
The time to plan is the move. JLL found that close to 40% of large office projects in the Paris region in 2025 began with a firm growing or moving to a better building, and a new floor means bare walls. Start with the reception and the boardroom, carry one palette through the corridors, and have your emblem, logo or a view of your city painted from your own image if you want one. Who chooses the art in a French hotel, and when?
The designer or an art consultant, ideally from the first mood board; the public rooms take the statement pieces, and the guest rooms and corridors need a set painted in one hand to the size of each room type.
France is building hotels at pace: 126 projects and 12,908 rooms were in its pipeline at the end of 2025, fourth in Europe, and the Paris openings listed for 2026 include an office building on the boulevard de la Bastille turned into a hotel, walls that start bare. Paris art consultants who build hotel programmes argue for bringing the art in at the start, with its own budget, working from the mood board and the zoning plan.
The hotels that make art part of the stay show what guests notice. Villa-des-Prés in Saint-Germain-des-Prés hangs large original canvases through its common areas and guest rooms, presented like a private collection; Le Negresco in Nice decorates each of its 124 rooms differently, around a collection of more than 6,000 works. For the rooms themselves, plan by room type: a 4-star double is at least 16 m² under the French classification, room for a canvas about two-thirds the width of the bed above the headboard. We paint one sample first if you want it, then the floor in the same hand and palette. More on hotels and restaurants in France.
How does ordering from France work, from first photo to the wall?
Much like a project with your decorator: you send the wall, accept a quote, approve each stage from photographs, and the canvas arrives by express, rolled or stretched and ready to hang.
If you have renovated in France, the rhythm will feel familiar. Many French interior designers make an order firm with a quote returned marked 'bon pour accord' and a deposit; with us, a proforma invoice and half the price start the painting, and the second half follows once you approve the photograph of the finished canvas. In between you receive photographs or video of each stage, and the next one starts only when you say yes.
Size decides how the canvas travels. Ordinary parcel post in France stops at 200 cm for length, width and height added together, so large canvases travel by DHL, FedEx or UPS express, or by air or sea freight for a big order, on the route we find best for your address, with the shipping cost confirmed before dispatch. Rolled is the lightest and most economical way, and a roll climbs any staircase; heavily textured and relief work travels stretched or framed.

Wall art in France FAQs
How long does a painting take to reach Paris, Lyon, Nice or Monaco?
About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to any address in France or Monaco, from a Paris flat to a farmhouse in the Dordogne. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.
Can you paint a larger version of a painting I saw in a Paris gallery?
A work by a living painter is in copyright, so we would need the rights holder's permission to paint it. What we can always do is paint something in the same spirit: send us a photo of what caught your eye and the size of your wall, and we suggest catalogue designs that share its palette and mood, or design a new piece for you.
Can you match the colours of my curtains, sofa or stone floor?
Yes. Send photographs of the fabric, stone or paint taken in daylight, ideally beside a sheet of white paper, and the palette is mixed to them. You see the colours on the canvas in the stage photographs and approve them before the next stage begins, so a terracotta or a celadon lands the way you pictured it.
Do you work with interior designers and architectes d'intérieur in France?
Yes, often. Send the drawings, sizes and palette for each room and we paint to them, label every canvas by room or position with a packing list, and send the stage photographs straight to whoever approves them, you or your client. Your quote usually arrives within one business day, and order codes stay on file for re-orders.
Is one painting for a Paris flat too small an order?
Not at all. The minimum order is one piece, so a single canvas for a studio in the Marais or a flat in Lyon is welcome, and it can double as a sample if you plan more. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces, which suits a whole house, an office floor or a run of hotel rooms.
Can I return a painting if it does not suit the room?
Every piece is painted to order and you approve a photograph of the finished canvas before it ships, so finished pieces are not returnable; ask for a side-lit photograph if you want to see the texture first. Damage in transit is rare, under 0.01% of pieces; if it happens, send us photos and we take it up with the carrier and work out a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund.
How should I look after a canvas in a sunny Riviera room?
Hang it out of direct sun where you can, draw the blinds in the hottest hours, and keep it away from radiators and air-conditioning outlets. Dust it with a dry cloth, never a spray. Acrylic on canvas is our standard and oil is available on request; tell us where the piece will hang and we suggest a finish that suits the light.

Tell us about your wall, from Paris to the Riviera
Send a photo of the wall, its width and the ceiling height (in a Paris building, the floor helps too) on WhatsApp, with the quote form or by email. We usually reply within one business day with a size that suits the room, a price for each piece and, if you like, a shortlist from the catalogue.
