French Riviera wall art for sea-view villas, Monaco flats and hotels

iHomeArt paints French Riviera wall art by hand and to order: original canvases for villas from Saint-Tropez to Menton, Monaco apartments and penthouses, and the hotels of the coast, each painted to the size of its wall. Where the sea side of the house is glass, three things decide the order: which wall, what size, and colours that hold their own against the view.

Which wall in a sea-view villa should take the painting?

The solid wall that faces the glass: everyone looks at it from across the room, so give it one large canvas or a pair, in a matte or textured finish that the glare cannot flatten.

Riviera villas are built to look out. One architect's villa above Monaco slides wide panoramic bay windows under raw-concrete overhangs, and the houses are generous: one agency's Cap d'Antibes list runs from 250 m² of living space to a 700 m² estate. The sea side of the salon is glass, so the painting goes on the inland wall opposite, seen from the far side of a long room. Size it to that wall rather than to the sofa: one canvas of 2 to 3 metres, or two panels that hang as one.

The light decides the finish. Gloss facing a wall of glass throws the sea's glare back into the room; a matte surface or palette-knife texture reads at any hour, and unglazed canvas adds no reflections. The rooms themselves stay quiet: a 2026 feature on a villa at Cap-d'Ail, on the Monaco border, pairs a 19th-century Murano mirror and vintage leather seating with a calm palette that answers the azure outside. One large canvas sits with pieces like that better than a cluster of small frames, which is how many French interior architects now prefer to hang a living room.

How do you plan French Riviera wall art for a whole villa?

As one set, room by room: settle the palette for the rooms guests walk through, then give each wall its own size, from a panoramic in the salon to a tall canvas in the entrance and lighter pieces in the pool house.

A villa on this coast holds a great many walls. At the top of the market one agency lists a Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat villa of 677 m² with nine bedrooms and Cannes Californie houses of more than 1,000 m²; further down, a Cap d'Antibes estate pairs a 450 m² main house with a 250 m² guest house. Planned in one pass, such a house stays consistent: one palette, or one hand, through the salon, entrance and dining room, and more freedom in the bedrooms and pool house. Ten pieces or more reach volume pricing, and each canvas still gets its own size and finish. The sizes below are a starting point; every piece is painted to the wall you send us. What suits a Monaco apartment, from a studio to a Mareterra penthouse?

In most Monaco flats, one well-chosen canvas per room, about 100–140 cm wide over the sofa or the bed; in the penthouses, the villa's brief of one long inland wall and a canvas of 2 metres or more.

Monaco is mostly a market of compact homes: about 78% of its 2024 resales were studios and one- or two-bedroom flats, though sales of five rooms or more rose to 34 in 2024 from 14 in 2015. A 75 m² three-room flat in Les Lierres, a featured listing in October 2024, is the everyday scale. On a sofa wall of 2.5 to 3 metres, one canvas of 120–140 cm (47–55 in) holds the room where two would crowd it.

The larger tier is growing. Mareterra, the 6-hectare district reclaimed from the sea and delivered at the end of 2024, includes a 17-storey building by Renzo Piano with quadruplex penthouses, homes that face the sea through glass and take a villa's art. And the Principality's shortage of large homes has pushed its buyers along the coast, to Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Cannes and Les Parcs de Saint-Tropez. Moving from a flat to a villa, the art you own will look small on the new walls; a canvas made to the wall solves that.

Which colours and subjects make good French Riviera wall art?

Let the view supply the blue: sand, stone, white and olive inside, one accent of sea blue or terracotta, and subjects that suggest water, rock and garden rather than postcards of the coast.

The calmest Riviera rooms leave the strong colour outside, as the Cap-d'Ail villa does with the azure of the sea, and in contemporary houses raw concrete frames the glass. Against walls like these, three registers work almost everywhere:

  • Sea and light. White, blue and turquoise abstraction, or a loosely painted seascape, for the salon that faces the water.
  • Stone and texture. Plaster relief and Wabi-Sabi work in sand, cream and grey, where texture does the work bright colour would.
  • Garden and hinterland. Palms, olive trees and the Provençal palette for the pool house, the dining terrace and the old mas behind the coast.

Those Provençal colours have a long history: the region's printed fabrics, descended from Indian indiennes that came through Marseille in the 17th century, carry olive and lavender motifs in madder red and indigo. Taken as colour rather than illustration, a lavender field becomes violet and ochre that suit a modern villa as well as a farmhouse. Who chooses the art in a Riviera or Monaco home?

Usually the interior designer or the firm furnishing the house turnkey; we paint to their plans and palette, label each canvas by room, and send the stage photographs to whoever approves them.

Whoever furnishes the house usually chooses the art with it. Monaco has its own studios, such as Humbert & Poyet, based in the Principality and working on homes, hotels, restaurants and shops. Paris designers work here too, from Charles Zana, whose projects include the Lou Pinet hotel in Saint-Tropez, to Rodolphe Parente, who designed a South-of-France residence with a couple of collectors. Some practices treat art as part of the design: one firm with an office in Cannes says it orchestrates the artistic creation of its projects. Others furnish turnkey, with furniture packages and home staging.

A painting made to order fits either way of working. Send the elevations or a photo of each wall with its width, the scheme's fabrics or stone photographed in daylight, and the budget; we propose designs from some 1,300 in the catalogue or design pieces for the project, in a palette mixed to your materials. Each canvas is labelled by room or position on a packing list, the stage photographs go straight to whoever approves them, and the codes stay on file for re-orders. See art for residential interior designers.

  • Furnishing turnkey

Order the art with the furniture package, room by room, so the house is finished on the day the owner arrives.

  • Staging a villa

A set in one palette dresses the main rooms, and every piece is sold outright, so it can stay with the house.

What are the Riviera's palace hotels renovating, and where does art come in?

Wing by wing and suite by suite, so order the art the same way: one sample approved first, then a run of rooms painted in the same hand and palette.

France counts 33 hotels with the Palace distinction in 2026, 13 of them in Paris, and the grand hotels of the coast renew themselves in phases. The Maybourne Riviera at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin was scheduled to reopen in spring 2026 with 69 rooms and suites designed by André Fu, and the 332-room Carlton in Cannes was renovated in 2023 and gained two new residential wings. In Monaco, the Hôtel Hermitage's latest phase delivered more than 40 renovated rooms in its Prince wing for 2026, and Le Deck at Monte-Carlo Beach was redesigned by Dorothée Delaye in 2025. New openings add more walls, such as COMO Le Beauvallon near Saint-Tropez with 42 rooms.

Le Negresco in Nice shows the heritage end, with 124 rooms each decorated differently around a collection of more than 6,000 works. For guest rooms, plan by type: a 4-star suite under the French classification has at least 40 m² with separate living and sleeping areas, so two walls and two canvases. Whether you are the designer, the FF&E buyer or the owner, we paint to your drawings, sizes and palette, room type by room type; order with the furniture so the rooms open dressed for the season. How do you order a painting for a house on the coast when you are not there?

From wherever you are: send photographs of the wall with its width, approve each stage from photographs, and choose rolled, stretched or framed to suit how the canvas will reach the house.

A gallery remains the place for the named artist you collect, and France's gallery trade sits mainly in the capital: 81% of the members of its professional gallery association are based in Île-de-France. A wall that needs a particular size, palette or set is a commission, and that works at a distance (see where to buy art in France).

Start with a photo of each wall, its width and the ceiling height; one canvas can be painted first as your sample. Photographs or video of every stage go to you, your designer or your house manager, and the next stage starts only once you approve. The wider picture is in our France wall art guide.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

French Riviera wall art FAQs

Do you paint art for yachts moored on the Riviera or in Monaco?

Yes. Interior studios on the coast work on yachts as well as homes and offices: one with offices in Monaco lists a yacht among its projects. A canvas for a saloon or a cabin is painted to its wall like any other. Send the wall dimensions, a photograph and how the piece will come aboard, and we suggest the size, format and finish.

What is the largest painting you can make for a villa or penthouse wall?

Send us a photograph of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and how the canvas will reach the room: the door, the stair or the lift. We look at it and suggest what suits, whether one large canvas that travels rolled and is stretched on the coast, or a set of two or three panels that hangs as one.

Can a painting be ready before the summer season?

Yes, if you plan for it. Painting takes about 10 days, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Nice, Cannes, Monaco or Saint-Tropez; allow time for your approvals at each stage, and for stretching on the coast if the canvas travels rolled. Larger hotel orders may go by air or sea freight, with the cost confirmed before dispatch.

Can you paint a view of the Riviera, such as the bay at Nice or my own terrace?

Yes. Send the photograph, your own or one you have permission to use, with the size of the wall, and we tell you how it will translate to canvas before painting it by hand. A hand-painted reproduction of an existing painting is possible too, with the rights holder's permission if the work is still in copyright. The design can stay exclusive to you if you ask before we start.

How do I see the canvas if I am not in France or Monaco?

Through photographs and video at every stage, sent to you, your designer or whoever approves, and a side-lit photograph of the texture if you ask. You approve the photograph of the finished piece before it ships, so finished pieces are not returnable; transit damage is rare, under 0.01%, and if it happens we take it up with the carrier and work out a solution with you.

Is one painting for a Monaco studio too small an order?

Not at all. The minimum order is one piece, which suits most Monaco homes: about 78% of 2024 resales were studios to two-bedroom flats. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces, for a villa set, a run of hotel rooms, or a Monaco flat and a house along the coast ordered together.
