Streaks of red, tangerine and violet explode outward from a sun just setting behind a dark shoreline, and the still lake below repeats the whole burst upside down.

The strokes all radiate from one point left of centre, where the sky is palest gold, so the clouds look as if they are rushing out toward the corners. Cobalt and cerulean blue hold the top edges, magenta and purple fill the middle, and the reflection deepens into indigo at the bottom. The brushwork is flat and directional, long tapered marks laid side by side with little build-up, which keeps the colour clean and saturated.
