Hotel wall art in France, from Haussmann floors to the bistro wall
iHomeArt paints hotel wall art for France by hand and to order: original canvases for Paris boutique hotels, château and wine-country hotels, and the restaurants and bars inside them, sized to each floor and painted in your scheme's palette. Paris now has a whole category of hotels known for their art; this guide covers what to hang, how large on each floor and how to keep forty rooms from looking alike.

Originals or prints: which hotel wall art suits a French boutique hotel?
Originals, wherever the walls are part of what the hotel offers: the Paris hotels guests seek out for their art hang paintings like a private collection, and painting to order brings that to a 30-room independent as well as to a palace.
Time Out's 2025 guide to the Paris hotels that house art collections runs from palaces such as Le Meurice to small houses. Villa-des-Prés, 34 rooms in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, hangs original works through its common areas and bedrooms in the spirit of a private collection, and Hôtel Dame des Arts says more than 70 works by artists linked to its quarter dress its walls. Guests notice: in a 2024 study of 621 French and European hotel guests, 47% called decoration important and a third very important.
A print in every room is quick to buy and easy to forget; a painting gives the room something to say, at reception and in guests' photographs. For a three- or four-star independent we suggest one large original where guests arrive, a painted canvas in every room, and a shared palette so the house reads as one collection. Nothing we send is printed. More for owners on art for boutique hotels.
Opening or converting a hotel in France: when should the art be chosen, and by whom?
As soon as the designer's palette and room schedule are fixed, well before handover; the interior designer or an art consultant usually leads, and we paint to their brief.
France had 126 hotel projects and 12,908 rooms in its pipeline at the end of 2025, fourth in Europe. Paris lists about a dozen openings inside the city for 2026, among them the 96-room Hôtel Boulevard de la Bastille, converted from offices, and the 90-room Radisson Collection Banke Opéra in a former bank. In a conversion every wall is new, and none comes with art.
The designer usually leads, as Maison Sarah Lavoine does on the 230-room hotel on L'Île Seguin, planned with an art centre and a sculpture trail. Paris hotel-art consultants advise starting the art programme at inception, with its own budget, from mood boards and a zoning plan. That line is easily lost: a 2026 French fit-out guide costs each room's headboard, wardrobes and desk line by line, while an international benchmark published in French lumps artwork in with lighting. Give the art its own line before the joinery uses it up. Whoever holds the brief, we paint to their mood board and room schedule; see art for consultants and FF&E buyers.
How large should hotel wall art be in a Haussmann building, floor by floor?
As large as each floor's ceiling: 200 cm or more in the ground-floor lobby and restaurant, 100–160 cm in the high rooms of the étage noble, and smaller pieces again under the roof.
A Haussmann building is several buildings stacked: 3.50–3.80 m ceilings on the ground floor, 3.20 m on the second-floor étage noble, 2.80–3.00 m above and about 2.60 m in the old service rooms under the roof. Rooms vary too: the national classification asks at least 13.5 m² of a three-star double, 16 m² of a four-star double and 40 m² of a suite with separate living and sleeping areas. One canvas size looks generous on the top floor and lost on the second, so size by floor:
| Floor and ceiling | Spaces | A canvas that holds the wall |
|---|---|---|
| Ground floor, 3.50–3.80 m | Lobby, reception, restaurant, bar | 200–300 cm wide (79–118 in), or a tall vertical by the stair |
| Étage noble, 3.20 m | Suites and the largest doubles | 100–120 cm (39–47 in) over the bed; a second piece of 120–160 cm (47–63 in) in a suite's sitting area |
| Upper floors, 2.80–3.00 m | Standard doubles of 13.5–16 m² | 80–110 cm wide (31–43 in) over the headboard |
| Under the roof, about 2.60 m | Attic rooms with sloping walls | 60–90 cm (24–35 in), often vertical on the one full-height wall |
Over a bed, about two-thirds of its width is a reliable start, hung 20–30 cm above the headboard. Send a floor plan with wall widths and we propose a size for each room type; homes are covered in the France size guide.
How do you give forty hotel rooms their own painting without losing the scheme?
Choose one subject or palette for each floor and have it painted in variations, so every room has its own canvas and each corridor still reads as one hotel.
French hotels that make art part of the stay rarely repeat a picture. Le Negresco in Nice decorates each of its 124 rooms differently, and the 48-room Drawing Hotel in Paris gave six artists free rein in its corridors and shows a new roster of artists each year. A different artist in every room is a collector's project; a series painted in one hand gives a working hotel the same effect.
A practical scheme: a theme for the house (the river, the garden, the rooftops of the quarter), a subject or palette per floor, and a variation in every room, with larger canvases for the suites. We resize a design to each wall, recolour it to your fabrics and vary the composition room by room, so the floors belong together without two rooms matching. Stage photographs go straight to whoever approves, usually the designer. See corridor series and art for guest rooms.
Labelled by room
Every canvas arrives labelled with its room number or position, with a packing list, so the installer can hang floor by floor.
Codes kept for re-orders
We keep the code of every piece on file, so a refurbished floor or a second property can order the same series years later.

What restaurant wall art suits a Paris brasserie, bistro or hotel dining room?
Art that holds its own beside mirrors, brass and chandeliers and reads from a seat: one long canvas above the banquette, or a set hung as a single frieze, rather than a scatter of small frames.
France's restaurants are designed as whole rooms. Some 102,000 traditional restaurants compete for the same diners, and openings treat décor as part of the menu: Big Mamma's Gloria, opened in Paris in November 2025, was styled by the group's in-house Studio Kiki as a 1970s Venetian villa, with monumental chandeliers, gilded mirrors and a wall of vinyl records. The Lutetia keeps the Art Deco frescoes of its Bar Joséphine.
In an independent bistro or a hotel dining room, diners see the walls sitting down, mirrors and windows take most of them, and a glazed front throws light across whatever hangs opposite, so place the painting as below. Subjects follow the French table: still life, warm abstraction in terracotta and ochre, or Art Deco geometry in gold and black. A dry cloth is all a canvas needs, never a spray. For groups with several sites, see restaurant wall art; palettes are on the French styles page.
Above the banquette
Hang the lower edge about 20–30 cm above the backrest, so seated diners see the whole canvas over their neighbours' heads.
On the solid wall
Give the painting the one wall without mirrors or glass, facing the room, rather than squeezing it between mirrored panels.
Matte against glare
Opposite a glazed front, a textured, matte surface keeps its colour where a glossy finish turns into a reflection.
Can a palace or heritage hotel have period paintings, or its own crest, painted?
Yes: we paint hand-made reproductions of works out of copyright, new canvases in a period manner and paintings from your own images, such as the façade, the view or the house crest; the headline collection pieces remain a gallery or auction purchase.
France counts 33 hotels with the Palace distinction, 13 of them in Paris. At that level the walls are a collection: Peter Marino furnished Cheval Blanc Paris with works by Georges Mathieu, Vik Muniz and Sonia Delaunay. Older Paris houses lean to the nineteenth century: Time Out points to 19th-century paintings at Maison Proust and Klimt lithographs at the Hôtel des Grands Voyageurs.
Between the collector's piece and the bare wall sit a suite's second wall, the corridors and the rooms of a Belle Époque or Art Deco house that wants its period without museum pieces. Hand-painted reproductions of works out of copyright, from Impressionist landscapes to salon painting, suit them; a work still in copyright needs the rights holder's permission. We also paint from your own material, such as an old engraving of the building, the view from the terrace or the house crest, kept exclusive to the hotel if you ask before we start: see paintings from your own image.
Château, vineyard, mountain or coast: what should hotel wall art show outside Paris?
The place the guest travelled for, painted loosely enough to live with: vines, stone and river light in Burgundy and Bordeaux, peaks in the Alps, sea and sky on the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
Much of France's 2026 opening list is regional and small. Burgundy gains Château la Commaraine in Pommard, the region's first five-star hotel, with 37 rooms, and the 36-room Château de Cîteaux in Meursault; La Villa Florentine in Lyon reopens with an art curator, and the 102-room Bel Hôtel Oléron opens on the Atlantic coast. Le Saint-Roch opens in Courchevel with 31 rooms in December 2026, and Le Saint-James reopens above Bordeaux at the end of 2026, its rooms looking over the Garonne.
Guests come to these hotels for the landscape, so the walls can carry it: the vineyard and village in a château, the mountain in a ski resort, the shore in a seaside hotel. Painted loosely rather than as a postcard, in the palette of the rooms, one subject can run through every floor. The Riviera's palaces have their own page: the Riviera and Monaco.

How does a hotel or restaurant in France order its art from iHomeArt?
Send the room schedule or photos of the walls on WhatsApp, by the quote form or by email; we propose sizes and designs, quote usually within one business day, and ship the canvases labelled by room once each stage is approved.
French design studios make an order binding on a quote returned marked 'bon pour accord' with a deposit; with us, half is paid upfront against a proforma invoice and half once you approve the photograph of the finished canvas, before it ships. Each quote is priced for your sizes and finishes, with volume pricing from ten pieces.
Choose the finish for the building. Stretched or framed pieces arrive ready to hang, and heavily textured or plaster work always travels that way. Each property is its own order, labelled and shipped to its own address, with the shipping cost confirmed before dispatch. The wider picture is in our France wall art guide.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.
Hotel wall art in France FAQs
How long does hotel art take to reach Paris, Lyon or Nice?
About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nice or any other address in France. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.
Can the paintings match our fabrics, carpet and stone?
Yes. Send photographs of the fabric, carpet, stone or paint taken in daylight, ideally beside a sheet of white paper, and the palette is mixed to them. You see the colours on the canvas in the stage photographs and approve them before the next stage starts.
Can we approve one painting before ordering for every room?
Yes. The minimum order is one piece, so a sample is simply a first order: we paint one canvas for a model room, you approve it, and the series follows in the same hand and palette, each piece checked against the one you approved.
What is the largest painting you can make for a hotel lobby in France?
Send us a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height (3.50–3.80 m is common on a Haussmann ground floor) and how the piece will reach it: street door, stair or lift. We suggest the size, format and finish that suit, from one large canvas shipped rolled to a two- or three-panel set that hangs as one.
Is one painting for a chambre d'hôtes or a small bistro too small an order?
Not at all. The minimum order is one piece, so a single canvas for a bistro's banquette wall or a guest room in a chambre d'hôtes is welcome. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces, which suits a hotel floor, a restaurant group or a set of gîtes ordered together.
What happens if a canvas arrives damaged?
It is rare: under 0.01% of pieces. Send us photos and we take it up with the carrier and work out a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund. Because each piece is painted to order and you approve the final photograph before it ships, finished pieces are not returnable.
