About this painting

Gold runs down the canvas like spilled honey, trickling off the top edge and out from under a large powder-blue bloom before collecting in a granular mound at the bottom right.

The peony itself is painted with care: dusty blue petals turned up at their edges in white, a white centre streaked with gold, a half-open bloom leaning in from the left edge and a small bud below it. Teal-green leaves rise from the bottom. Behind everything, the ground is dragged in vertical bands of pale blue, peach and grey that echo the falling drips.
