About this painting

Two white magnolias open on a soft grey ground, one tucked into the top left corner and a larger bloom right of centre, with a closed bud on a thin dark stem rising at top right.

The petals are knife-laid in thick, creamy ridges and edged with fine grey lines that keep each shape crisp. Their dark brown centres are dotted with silvery specks that catch the light. Gold shows up as a broken patch down the left side and as two long curved leaves low on either side. The grey behind is dragged in vertical strokes, paler toward the top right.
