Majlis wall decor and villa wall art in Qatar, room by room

iHomeArt paints majlis wall decor and villa wall art by hand and to order for homes in Doha, Lusail, The Pearl and across Qatar: original canvases for the men's majlis, the ladies' reception, the family halls and every suite. A Qatari villa receives guests in more than one room, so this guide goes wall by wall: what each should show, where it hangs and when to choose it.

Where does majlis wall decor go, and what should it show?

Above the seating on the wall guests face as they sit, hung low enough to read from a sofa, in calligraphy, geometry, abstraction or landscape rather than people or animals.

The majlis is the room guests judge the house by. Qatar's lifestyle guide Marhaba places it near the main entrance, where the host receives guests, relatives and friends, and UNESCO describes its cushions set against the walls. That seating plan decides the painting: the wall facing the entrance, or above the host's place, is the one every guest looks at, and they see it sitting down. Hang the canvas lower than in a hall, its lower edge some 20–30 cm above the sofa backs; on a long wall, one panoramic canvas or a matched pair keeps the symmetry of the seating.

Choose the subject for the most conservative guest the room will receive. Traditional Qatari homes valued architecture, calligraphy and textiles more than painting, and many households still keep images of people and animals out of the rooms where guests sit, which is why calligraphy, geometry, abstraction and landscape sit comfortably in a formal majlis; keep portraits, horses and falcons for the family rooms. Where the walls carry geometric or moulded panels, as one design firm describes in grand Qatari villas, size the canvas to the central panel.

How do you decorate an outer majlis built under the 2026 rules?

As two walls: the tall, open wall seen from the door and the gallery takes the largest canvas in the house, and the lower zone under the mezzanine takes long, low pieces above the seating.

Qatar's villa rules changed in June 2026. Ministerial Decision No. 108 of 2026 allows a detached majlis building of 7.5 to 10 metres with a mezzanine, which may cover up to 80% of the majlis. Those are building heights, not ceilings, but they change the room: a low zone under the mezzanine, and one tall, open wall seen from the door, the seats and the gallery above. Give that wall a vertical canvas or a stacked pair, and the seating under the gallery a long, low horizontal. Measurements are in the Qatar size guide.

The outer majlis is also the natural place for heritage. Traditionally the majlis was set up like a dark-brown tent with thin white lines, and Al Sadu weaving, inscribed by UNESCO for Qatar in 2025, works in bands of black, white, brown, beige and red. A geometric canvas in that palette ties a new majlis building to the tent it came from; more palettes are in Qatari taste and styles.

  • Measure after the ceiling goes in

Permit heights are outside dimensions. The wall you hang on is what remains under the gypsum ceiling and the gallery, so measure it on site.

  • Check it from the gallery rail

A canvas on the open wall is seen from above as well as from the seats: centre it where both can see it whole.

What majlis wall decor suits the ladies' reception?

More colour, pattern and texture than the men's majlis, chosen with the curtains, upholstery and chandelier rather than after them.

Qatari households often receive women guests separately: Marhaba describes ladies receiving friends and relatives in a guest room set aside inside the home, and UNESCO notes that women hold their own majlis gatherings. A recent Arabic guide to decorating the women's majlis, written for Qatar and its Gulf neighbours, sets ten priorities, from style and colours to seating, chandeliers, fabrics, curtains and mirrors, and files paintings under accessories.

Left to the end of that list, a painting gets whatever wall and budget remain. Choose it with the fabrics instead. Send us daylight photographs of the upholstery and curtains, ideally beside a sheet of white paper, and the palette is mixed to them. Florals in relief, soft abstracts and a touch of maroon, Qatar's national colour, all suit this room. Give the large mirror and the painting a wall each, so neither competes.

What should guests see as they come through the front door?

One tall painting that reads in a single glance from the door and still holds from the stair or lift landing, placed where the chandelier does not hide it.

In a Qatari villa the entrance hall can be the biggest room in the house. A Qatar University study of four middle-class villas built around 2015 found the largest space in one of them was the main entry hall, 10 by 5 metres, with the men's majlis beside it. Newer houses add height, like a Giardino Gardens villa on The Pearl that rises over four levels around a double-height reception.

The first wall wants one strong shape and palette, in a vertical canvas or a stacked pair. Mind the chandelier: in one Doha villa by Katharine Pooley a crystal chandelier cascades through the entrance hall, and a painting behind it would vanish, so use the side wall. Or anchor the canvas with furniture, as one Doha collector does with a large work above two antique Syrian chairs in his entrance. More in art for entrance halls.

Which paintings belong in the family halls and the dining room?

The personal ones: horses, falcons, the sea, heritage scenes and paintings from your own photographs, in halls a large villa repeats on every floor.

Behind the guest rooms a Qatari villa keeps its own living rooms, and plenty of them: a grand villa on Onaiza Street in Al Dafna lists three family lounges on the ground floor and a family living hall on each floor above. Here subjects can be personal. Heritage is a theme Qatari painters keep returning to; two of Katara's solo shows in early 2026 were portraits and paintings of local heritage and nostalgia. A painting from your own photograph belongs here too, such as the family's first house or a view from the boat: see paintings from your own image.

Against the beige limestone, soft white walls and natural wood that one Doha fit-out firm lists among current Qatari trends, one strong canvas carries colour better than several small ones. Where the majlis opens onto the living room through sliding screens, a layout one design firm lists among Doha trends, give both rooms' paintings one palette. In the dining room, a horizontal about two-thirds the length of the table, centred for seated eyes, rarely goes wrong.

How do you dress many suites and a family wing without repeating yourself?

Plan them as one series: a composition varied in colour from suite to suite, calm over each bed, and a second large canvas for the penthouse living hall.

The private floors are where the count climbs. The Al Dafna villa has nine master suites, new five-bedroom villas in Huzoom, Lusail, are sold with five master bedrooms, and since June 2026 a villa may add a family wing, with a self-contained suite for a relative.

One composition varied in colour keeps the house coherent and still gives each bedroom its own mood; a Doha villa by Katharine Pooley near the Museum of Islamic Art has one bedroom in magenta and another in navy, grey and biscuit beige. Over a bed, a canvas about two-thirds of the bed's width, hung 20–30 cm above the headboard, sits well. The penthouse hall, often lit from a terrace, takes the second-largest canvas in the house. Every canvas arrives labelled with its room, with a packing list, so nine suites are hung without guesswork. More in art for bedrooms.

What changes in a flat on The Pearl or in Lusail?

The wall is smaller, the sea view often competes with the painting, and the art should be able to move with you when you do.

Most flats are planned around one sofa wall rather than a set of receptions: a two-bedroom on The Pearl typically runs from about 134 to 221 m². Two kinds break the pattern. Double-height living rooms are sold as a feature, from a one-bedroom in La Plage South to new duplexes in Fox Hills, Lusail, and their void takes a tall canvas, as a villa hall does. Large penthouses behave like villas: one Porto Arabia penthouse of 850 m² has its own majlis and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Where the sea fills the glass, do not fight it: choose sea, sky and pale abstract tones that continue the view, on a wall the sun does not reach. If you rent, buy for yourself, not for the landlord's sofa. District by district, see our Doha guide.

When should the art for a new villa in Qatar be chosen?

While the ceilings and joinery go in, not after the family moves in, so every canvas can be sized, lit and coloured for the room it is going into.

A villa fit-out is long: one design firm working in Qatar allows six to nine months from design to furniture installation for a new villa. Chosen in that time, each painting can be sized to its wall, given a light in the ceiling plan and matched to fabrics still being ordered.

Send a floor plan, or a photo of each wall with its width and the ceiling height, on WhatsApp, the platform Qatari nationals use most, and tell us which rooms receive guests. We suggest a shortlist for each wall from some 1,300 catalogue designs, or design a set for the house; if you want to see one first, we paint a single canvas as your sample. Interior designers can start from art for interior designers; the wider picture is in our Qatar wall art guide.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

Majlis wall decor FAQs

Should the men's majlis and the ladies' majlis have matching paintings?

Not matching, but related. The men's majlis is the formal room, so its painting is usually larger, calmer and non-figurative; the ladies' reception can take more colour, florals and texture. If both open from the same entrance hall, keep one shared thread, such as the gold of the frames or a single colour, so the house reads as one.

How many paintings does a large Qatari villa need?

Often a dozen or more. Count the walls that guests or the family face, not the bedrooms: one grand villa in Al Dafna lists an outer and an inner majlis, three family lounges, two upper living halls and nine master suites. Add the entrance hall and the dining room, and a whole-house order easily passes ten pieces, where volume pricing begins.

Can a canvas hang in a tent or an open-air majlis?

Not for long. A tent or open-sided majlis lets in heat, sun, dust and damp sea air, and a canvas is happiest in an enclosed, air-conditioned room. Dress the tent with carpets, cushions and weaving, and keep the paintings for the majlis building, hung away from direct sun and air-conditioning outlets.

How should a painting be lit in a majlis with hidden lighting?

Give it a light of its own, planned with the ceiling. Concealed strips light the room but leave a canvas in shadow or graze across it; an adjustable spot or wall-washer, angled at about 30 degrees to the wall, lights it evenly without glare in guests' eyes. Textured and plaster work looks best with a little side light on the relief.

Can we start with the majlis and add the rest of the house later?

Yes. The minimum order is one piece, so you can begin with the room guests see first. We keep the order codes on file, so later canvases can be painted to match the approved photographs of the first, in the same palette and finish.

Do you paint for palaces as well as villas?

Yes. Under the 2026 rules a palace may rise 17 to 25 metres, depending on its plot, so its receptions and stair halls hold some of the largest walls in the country. Send us the plans and photographs, and we suggest a size, format and finish for each space: one oversized canvas, rolled and stretched in Doha, or a set of panels that hangs as one.
