Doha is full of art: why is a painting for your own wall hard to find?

Because Qatar built its art scene around museums, public commissions and a collectors' fair, while the places in between, the shops, studios and galleries that sell a painting for a home, stayed few and small.

Few cities of Doha's size show as much art. Qatar Museums' public art programme counts more than 100 works, Mathaf holds about 10,000 modern Arab works, and the first Art Basel Qatar drew more than 17,000 visitors in February 2026. Buying is another matter: in January 2026 Qatar Museums' deputy chief executive said the country still needs a stronger commercial art sector.

So decide first what the wall needs. More than half of consumers in Qatar still shop mainly in stores, but the stores mostly sell prints and the galleries a small circle of named artists. A ready-made piece for a flat, a collector's work for the wall guests remember and a canvas of a size no shelf carries are three different purchases, taken in turn below; the wider picture is in our Qatar wall art guide.

Where to buy art in Doha: which seller suits which wall?

Home stores for a quick print, framers for finishing, the souq studios for meeting a painter, galleries and fairs for a named artist, and a made-to-order studio once the wall outgrows all of them.

Each kind of seller in Doha does one job well. Read the table from the right, from the wall you are dressing to the seller who serves it.

Size runs out early: outside the galleries, a painting much over 1.5 metres is rare on any Doha shelf or listing, while the entrance hall of a middle-class Qatari villa can measure 10 by 5 metres.

Can you buy a large painting off the shelf in Qatar?

Rarely: the mall stores stop at prints of about 1.2 to 1.4 metres, so for a majlis wall or a double-height reception you are commissioning, whoever paints it.

Qatari homes are built bigger than the stock. The 2026 villa rules let an external majlis building rise 7.5 to 10 metres, one Qatar studio's 2026 majlis scheme covers 150 m² in a single room, and a Giardino villa on The Pearl lists a double-height reception. In a majlis the seating runs along the walls, so the painting hangs above a long line of sofas and needs width to match: a 1.2-metre print floats on a six-metre wall. A shop print still suits a bedroom, a study or a smaller apartment.

Read the label as well as the picture: most stores describe their pieces honestly as framed or canvas prints, and the few labelled hand-painted rarely pass 1.4 metres. Sizes for Qatari rooms are in the Qatar size guide.

  • Paint or print?

Shine a phone torch across the surface: brushstrokes and knife marks cast small shadows that change from stroke to stroke, while a print stays flat or repeats one embossed pattern.

  • Ask to see it being made

A painter can show you the canvas in progress. Ours are photographed at every stage, with a side-lit shot of the texture if you ask.

Where can you see paintings for sale in Doha before you buy?

Around Katara Cultural Village, at the Fire Station and in Souq Waqif's studios, and above all in the cooler months, when Doha's art festival and Art Basel Qatar bring hundreds of artists to town.

Katara Cultural Village is the best single stop. The Qatar Fine Arts Association is based there, and its 2025 Al-Nukhba exhibition hung 47 works by 44 Qatari artists; Katara's early-2026 solo shows were portraits and scenes of local heritage. The Fire Station, a former civil-defence headquarters reopened by Qatar Museums, runs three exhibition spaces, and in Souq Waqif portrait painters work in small studios between the stalls. Take a photo of your wall with you: an exhibition is the place to ask an artist about a commission.

The biggest gatherings fall in the cooler months. The Qatar International Art Festival returns to Katara on 7–12 December 2026, after a 2025 edition its organisers put at more than 2,000 works by 450 artists, and Art Basel Qatar's second edition runs 28–30 January 2027 in Msheireb.

When is a Doha gallery or art fair the right place to buy?

When you want a named Qatari, Arab or international artist's own work, the piece you collect or the centrepiece of a lobby, and you are happy with the size the artist chose.

Qatar's modern painting has a short, distinguished line: Jassim Zaini is regarded as the founder of the movement, and Yousef Ahmad held the first solo exhibition by a Qatari artist in 1977. Doha's galleries show their successors beside Arab and international names. At the first Art Basel Qatar more than half of the 84 artists came from Southwest Asia and North Africa, and dealers openly hoped many works would go to museums.

Hotels buy at this level for the walls guests photograph: The Ned Doha's collection of more than 350 works includes 60 commissions, with two-thirds of its artists based in Doha, and Rosewood Doha hangs abstract expressions of desert light by Qatari artists. A villa or an office floor can follow the same plan: buy the one named piece first, then have the other walls painted in its palette and at their own sizes. Where do you buy Arabic calligraphy art in Doha?

From calligraphers, met at Katara's exhibitions or through a gallery, for original lettering; from framers and stores for printed verses; and for a verse the width of a majlis wall, from a calligrapher's design painted to size.

In Qatar, lettering has long counted for more than pictures: calligraphy, architecture and textiles were traditionally valued above painting. The market is real. At Katara's first Arabic calligraphy symposium, in 2015, almost all of one calligrapher's work sold, and Katara has also hosted Ramadan calligraphy exhibitions. Calligraphers train at home too: Fatma Al Sharshani studied at the Museum of Islamic Art before painting the 'Al Noor' mural for Qatar Museums.

A printed verse is quick, but it comes at the store's size and in its colours. For a majlis, ask a calligrapher for the artwork, use it with their permission and have a native reader check the letters. We paint it by hand at the width of the wall, in gold on maroon, ivory on sand or your room's palette, and you approve the lettering in the stage photographs. Send the design with the wall size: paintings from your own image.

When is commissioning the better way to buy art in Qatar?

When the wall is wider than the shelves, the room is built around one stone or fabric, the house needs a set that belongs together, or the subject is yours alone: your horse, your view, your family's verse.

Timing decides as much as size. A new villa in Qatar takes six to nine months from design to furniture, according to one design firm's guide, and two established Doha fit-out contractors list no artwork among their services, so art is often ordered last, when the budget is spent. Choose it while the joinery goes in, and the canvases are painted in time for the move.

Palette is the other reason. A Doha fit-out firm sums up the current look as beige limestone floors, soft white walls and natural wood; a canvas mixed to those tones, to Qatar's national maroon or to the red, black and white of a sadu weave belongs in the room as a catalogue print cannot. Send daylight photos of the stone or fabric and the colours are mixed to them. Whole-house planning is in villas and majlis in Qatar.

How do you buy a painting for a Qatar wall from iHomeArt?

Send a photo of the wall on WhatsApp; we suggest sizes and designs, quote usually within one business day, and you approve every stage from photographs before the canvas leaves for Qatar.

WhatsApp is the most used platform among Qatari nationals, and the quickest way to start: a photo of the wall, its width and the ceiling height are enough. We reply with a size and a shortlist from some 1,300 catalogue designs, or design a piece for your project. Planning a set? Order one canvas first; the rest follow in the same hand once you approve it, each labelled by room. Instead of judging a painting on a shop wall, you see your own canvas in photographs at every stage.

Larger orders may go by air or sea freight, with the shipping cost confirmed before dispatch. Designers will find their own terms on art for interior designers.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

Buying art in Doha FAQs

Can you paint a larger version of a painting I saw in Doha?

Often, yes. If it is an artist's work still in copyright, we need the rights holder's permission first. Otherwise, send a photo of what you liked with the wall's measurements: we suggest catalogue designs in the same mood, or design a new piece, painted at the width the wall needs.

Do you paint falcons, Arabian horses and Qatari heritage scenes?

Yes. Falcons, camels and heritage scenes are subjects Qatar returns to, down to the murals of Al Sadd metro station. Choose from the horses, birds and wildlife in our catalogue, or send a photograph of your own horse, falcon or view, and we paint it by hand at the size of your wall.

How long does a painting take to reach Doha, Lusail or Al Wakrah?

About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Doha, Lusail, Al Wakrah, Al Khor or any other address in Qatar. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.

Can I buy second-hand paintings in Doha?

Only now and then: Qatar's classified sites carry a handful of paintings at any one time, and the rare large piece offered privately is usually a collector's item. For a wall of a particular size, a new canvas painted to it is quicker to find than a used one that happens to fit.

How do I pay for a painting ordered from Qatar?

You pay half upfront against a proforma invoice, and the second half after you have approved a photograph of the finished canvas, before it is shipped. Each quote is priced for its sizes, finishes and number of pieces and usually reaches you within one business day, whether you ask on WhatsApp, through the quote form or by email.

What happens if a painting arrives damaged in Qatar?

It is rare: under 0.01% of pieces. If it happens, send us photos on arrival; we take the claim up with the carrier and work out a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund. Because every piece is painted to order and you approve its final photograph before dispatch, finished pieces are not returnable.
