About this painting

A long-haired cat stares straight out with wide amber eyes, its face built from flat slabs of turquoise, white, coral, purple and red knife paint on a yellow ground. The ears fill the top corners in red and violet, a coral nose sits dead centre above a white muzzle, and fine white whiskers fan out to each side.

The strokes are smallest and most careful around the eyes, which hold the gaze; elsewhere they are broad and overlapping, a patchwork of coloured fur, with deep blue gathering at lower right.

Is CA#1107 based on a particular breed of cat?

No breed is copied. The full cheek fur, broad face and amber eyes suggest a long-haired cat such as a Persian or Maine Coon, but the colours are invented. For a portrait of a particular pet, a commission from the owner's own photographs is also possible.

Why does the cat in CA#1107 fade into loose strokes below the chin?

So the face appears to emerge from pure colour. Below the chin the fur breaks into dripping patches of blue, pink, yellow and white that run off the bottom edge, which keeps the attention on the eyes and stops the canvas from reading as a literal pet portrait.
