About this painting

Pale rays fan upward from a low sun hidden in cloud, and the light they carry drops onto a grey-teal lake as a broad gold band. A slate-grey strip of far shore marks the horizon, slightly above halfway.

The sky is dragged outward from the sun in long thin strokes of peach, cream and beige, streaked with grey. Below the horizon the gold reflection angles in from the left edge, then breaks up into fine white lines and patches of teal that darken toward the bottom. Gold is the only strong colour, so the eye rests there.
