About this painting

Brown leaves gather at the upper left like a tree canopy and melt downward into long drips of gold and umber over a pale cream ground. The paint is thin and watery, so each drip keeps a soft edge and earlier layers show through.

On the right the cream thins to grey, streaked with fine vertical runs, while a single stroke of slate blue cuts diagonally under the canopy as the coolest note in the picture. The lower edge stays loose, ochre and brown with no ground line, so the tree seems to dissolve rather than stand.
