About this painting

The sun sits right on a dark strip of shoreline, a small hot disc of orange and gold, and its light runs straight down across still blue water as a broken yellow path. Above it the clouds open in streaks: coral and salmon at the left, lemon and pale mint climbing to the top edge, plum and slate gathering at the right where the sky turns stormier.

The sea is brushed in long sweeps of cobalt, periwinkle and lavender, darkest in the bottom left corner. Colours are blended into one another rather than built up, with fine lighter streaks dragged through the sky.
