Premium-quality wholesale oil paintings from China: original or print?

Original: every canvas we supply is painted by hand after you order it, in oil on request or in acrylic, our standard, and none of it is printed.

Anyone buying wholesale oil paintings from China learns to ask how a canvas was made before its price: a print finished with brushstroke gel looks convincing in a listing photo. iHomeArt, the trade channel of Siji Art Hub, Foshan, China, supplies premium-quality originals: each piece is painted to order, and you see every stage in photos or video before the next one begins.

What to tell your customers. Exactly what it is: an original painting, hand-painted to order, acrylic on canvas, or oil on canvas when you ordered oil. Keep the stage photos; a customer shown the canvas half-painted stops wondering whether it is a print.

Wholesale oil paintings or acrylics: which should a gallery stock?

Acrylic, our standard, suits most of a gallery's wall, with oil paintings painted to order on request for the pieces and customers that call for oil.

One order can mix the two: name the medium on each line, and label every piece by the medium it was painted in. The customer who asks for oil by name is usually the one who checks.

Which wholesale original art suits a gallery or framing-shop wall?

A wall reads as curated when it holds three or four strands, each in one manner: bold abstracts, texture, animals, and florals or faces are dependable places to start.

Walk-in customers stop at one strong piece, then browse, so give each strand a lead canvas at a larger size with smaller companions around it, and keep the frames to two or three finishes. See also works for galleries and shops and figurative works. Selling from a furniture showroom floor instead? Furniture showrooms and retail flagships covers recolouring to a collection.

What sizes of wholesale canvas paintings should a framer order?

Order the designs that suit your customers as a run of two or three sizes, so one picture hangs at a small, a middle and a statement price point.

SizeIn your customer's homeOn your wall
61 × 51 cm (24 × 20 in)A hallway, a bedside wall, a presentThe counter and the browsing rack
81 × 61 cm (32 × 24 in)Over a console, a desk or a bedThe main grid at eye level
122 × 91 cm (48 × 36 in)Over a sofa or a sideboardThe lead piece of a strand, or the window
61 × 61 to 91 × 91 cm (24 to 36 in square)Pairs above twin beds, grids of fourA block that breaks up a run of verticals

These are catalogue sizes, not limits: give us the stretcher size or frame opening for each piece, and canvases are painted to fit the mouldings and ready-made frames you stock. A size run also opens a service of your own. Hang the small and middle sizes, take orders at the exact size of a customer's wall, and we paint it for you to frame.

Why do framers buy their canvases rolled?

Rolled canvas costs least to ship and leaves soonest, and the stretching and framing then become work you sell in your own shop.

An unstretched canvas travels in a tube, a fraction of the size of a framed box, with no stretcher bars or frame to make before dispatch: a lower shipping cost per piece and a shorter wait. The most valuable step is then yours. Your moulding, mount and hours turn the canvas into a finished piece at your price, and the customer can choose the frame at the counter.

Each image is painted to the size you give, with spare canvas around it for stretching. Our price per piece follows the size, the surface (thick knife work and plaster take longer) and the finish, with volume pricing from 10 pieces counted across the whole order.

What travels stretched. Plaster relief, 3D texture and heavy palette-knife work would crack in a tube, so they arrive stretched but frameless, and the framing stays yours. If the lighter parcel matters more, we agree a thinner texture that rolls before painting starts. Framed pieces, in gold, silver, black, white or wood, suit canvases you want to hang straight from the box.

When a painting sells, can we re-order it?

Yes: send its code and size and it is painted again by hand as a new canvas, or varied so the next one on your wall is a picture of its own.

Nothing waits on a shelf, so nothing sells out: any code can be ordered again next month or next year. Write the code on the back of each canvas and on your stock sheet, and a re-order is one line in a message. The new canvas is painted against the photograph you approved for the first, so colour and composition hold while the brushwork stays the work of a hand.

Repeat or vary? A best-seller can go back up as it was, sold as what it is: a hand-painted original of a catalogue design. If a customer bought their piece as one of a kind, order the next through the Vary route on the custom page: a related composition, so theirs stays unique. Gather single re-orders into one order and they count together towards volume pricing.

Can a gallery sell hand-painted reproductions, or paint a customer's photo?

Yes to both: famous paintings out of copyright are reproduced by hand at any size, and a framer can send in a customer's photo to be painted on canvas.

Reproductions. Many customers who ask for an oil painting have a famous one in mind. Paintings out of copyright, such as Vermeer's girl with a pearl earring or a Van Gogh self-portrait, are painted again by hand at the size wanted, in oil if asked. A work still in copyright needs the rights holder's permission. Label each for what it is, such as "hand-painted reproduction after Vermeer, oil on canvas", and it sells honestly beside your originals.

Commissions from the counter. Send us a customer's dog, family house or view from the terrace, with the size, and it is painted by hand on canvas; the stage photos let them follow it, and the canvas comes back to you to frame. The photo must be the customer's own or used with permission. See paintings from your own image.

When should wholesale oil paintings be ordered for an opening or a new season?

Count back from the opening night through your own framing days, transit and painting, plus a few days for any oil pieces, and order the wall as one consignment.

For a new season, add the last wall's re-orders to the new one, so one consignment covers both.

  1. Choose the wallPick codes from the catalogue, or send a photo of the wall and a line about your customers for a shortlist.
  2. Priced and datedEvery piece priced and dated, usually within one business day, medium and finish on each line.
  3. Approve each stagePhotos or video of each canvas as it is painted; reply on WhatsApp and the painter carries on.
  4. Final photographsApprove each finished canvas from its photograph; the balance is paid and the order packed together.
  5. Frame in your workshopStretch and frame the rolled canvases; textured ones arrive stretched, needing only a frame or a hook.
  6. Open, then re-orderHang the wall, note which codes go first, and send them back as your next order.

Importers and distributors: can premium wholesale paintings run as fixed lines?

Yes: fix a range of codes in set sizes and every one is painted again on each order, so the range behaves like stock lines while every canvas stays hand-painted.

An importer or trading company supplying decor retailers needs what a gallery needs, multiplied: lines that re-order one by one, quality that holds from the first consignment to the tenth, and an honest description passed down to the shop floor. The first approved piece of each line becomes the reference for every repeat. For retailers who sell online and ship each canvas to their buyer, see online sellers and dropship.

Sourcing agents in China: can you supply on behalf of an overseas buyer?

Yes: we deal with whoever places the order, so a sourcing agent or buying office orders, approves and pays, and the canvases ship to the principal abroad or to the consolidator you name.

iHomeArt is the trade channel of Siji Art Hub, Foshan, China, a simple source of original art for a retailer, hotel group or design studio overseas. The quote, the proforma invoice, the stage photos and the final photographs all come to you, ready to forward to your principal.

Settle two things at the start: who approves each stage, you or your principal, and whose name and address go on the shipment. Then start with one piece for the principal to judge in hand; it becomes the reference for every canvas in the main order.

Wholesale oil paintings: questions galleries and framers ask

How can our customers tell a hand-painted canvas from a print?

Show them the surface in light from the side: brush and knife marks stand proud of the canvas, colours overlap at their edges and thick passages cast small shadows. Under a magnifying glass a print shows a regular dot pattern; paint shows none. Best of all, show them the stage photos of their canvas half-finished.

Do you supply on sale-or-return or consignment terms?

Every piece is sold outright, and because you approve a photograph of each finished canvas before it ships, approved pieces are not returnable. The one-piece minimum keeps the risk small: hang a single canvas, watch how customers respond, then order more of what works.

Can we have a design that only our gallery sells?

Yes, when it is agreed before painting starts. The usual route is a design made for you, such as a series varied from a catalogue work or a commission from your own brief. Ask for exclusivity with the quote, and the terms are settled before the first canvas is painted.

Can we sell the paintings under our gallery's name?

Yes. No piece is signed and nothing on the canvas carries our name, so each painting sells as your gallery's own stock. Describe it truthfully as an original, hand-painted on canvas; if a customer asks how it was made, the stage photographs you approved show the canvas being painted.

How should we handle rolled canvas before stretching it?

Let the tube reach room temperature before opening it, as cold paint is less flexible. Unroll the canvas paint side up on a clean, flat surface and let it relax for a day before stretching. To store canvases for a while, roll them loosely around a wide tube, paint facing outward, with no weight on top.

What happens if a canvas arrives damaged?

It is rare: careful packing and trusted carriers keep our return rate under 0.01%. If it happens, photograph the tube or box and the canvas before discarding any packaging, and send us the pictures. We take the claim up with the carrier and work out a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund.
