A white Afghan hound stands perfectly still in profile, muzzle pointed to the right, its long coat falling in combed waves all the way to its feet. The tail ends in a neat ring, the one flourish in an otherwise calm outline.

Fine pale grey strokes pick out each scalloped lock, giving the coat the sheen of brushed silk, and the dog seems to glow against the dark. The upper half is near-black; below the horizon a dark floor is broken by flat taupe patches like wet stepping stones. No shadow is cast, which keeps the figure quiet and slightly unreal.
