Wall art for living rooms in Dubai and Abu Dhabi homes, room by room

iHomeArt paints wall art for living rooms in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and across the UAE by hand and to order: original canvases for the majlis, reception, family room and bedrooms of villas and apartments, each sized to its wall. Because a UAE villa has several living rooms, each seen from a different seat, this page goes room by room: which wall takes the painting, how it hangs and what suits it.

Which living room in a UAE home is the wall art for?

Often more than one: a villa keeps a guest side, with the majlis and the formal reception, and a family side with its own living room, and each wants a different painting for a different viewer.

Most advice on wall art for a living room assumes a house has one; a UAE villa usually has several. Dubai villa architects describe Emirati family homes as running two circulation systems that rarely touch: a guest side, with the men's majlis by the main entrance, a women's majlis by a separate entry and the formal dining room, and a family side with the bedrooms, the family living room and informal dining. Even a four-bedroom villa on Saadiyat Lagoons has a dedicated majlis as well as a family living area.

So decide which side of the house a painting is for before you choose it. On the guest side it is seen by visitors, often seated and from across the room, and it sets the tone of the house; on the family side it only has to please the people who live there. An apartment folds all of this into one living room, which makes its one solid wall count twice. Sizes for each room are in the UAE size guide.

How do you decorate a majlis wall with a painting?

Hang one wide painting or a set on the long wall above the seating, lower than you would in a hall because guests see it sitting down, and keep it calm so it does not compete with the room's ceiling and stone.

Majlis seating runs along two or three walls, with seats only 40–45 cm high, so your guests' eyes are well below a standing visitor's. Hang the painting a short gap above the sofa backs, not high on the wall, so the people sitting opposite take it in without looking up. In Abu Dhabi homes, framed artworks and decorative panels are replacing heavy carved ornament above the sofas, while ceilings become panels of geometric gypsum with cove lighting. With so much overhead, one 2026 guide to styling a UAE majlis advises one or two crafted elements against a quiet backdrop: a broad, calm canvas holds the wall better than a busy one.

Not every majlis is a grand hall. Some houses put the men's majlis in a pavilion outside the main house, and Saadiyat Lagoons villas offer a 376 sq ft garden pod that can serve as one. In a room of about 35 m² guests sit close to the wall, so a painting of more modest width, with brushwork worth seeing up close, suits it better than a panoramic. And the majlis is not only for gatherings: one design practice writing about Abu Dhabi homes calls it the room the family uses most. The subjects that suit it are in UAE taste and styles.

What holds a double-height wall in a villa reception?

One canvas big enough to read from the front door and from the landing above, hung on the plain wall rather than the feature wall, and out of the sun that comes through the tall glazing.

Double-height living rooms are not only for mansions: Dubai listings show them in four-bedroom townhouses and mid-market family villas, and some Palm Jumeirah villa layouts run a double-height gallery through the centre of the house. Such a wall is seen from three places, the front door, the sofas and the landing above, and a canvas sized for an ordinary room disappears from all three. Think in tall verticals beside the stair or one large piece centred on the long wall, and judge it from the upper floor before you decide.

Many receptions already have a feature wall: one remodelled Palm Jumeirah villa builds its double-height reception around green Cipollino marble crossed with brass inlays. Leave such a wall to itself and give the painting the wall facing it, in a palette that picks up the stone or the brass. Tall rooms also have tall windows: art-collecting owners on Saadiyat control daylight with deep reveals, screens and blinds, and a canvas lasts best where the afternoon sun does not reach it. See tall vertical works.

What wall art suits the family living room?

Whatever the household loves, since the guest side is elsewhere: this is the room for colour, for a family picture turned into a painting, and for the large canvas that is simply a pleasure to come home to.

The family side is where UAE owners take their liberties. A couple in an Old Dubai villa kept their walls white to make the art stand out and collect mostly figurative, colourful work; a Dubai interior designer filled her Green Community villa with pinks, blues and large colourful canvases because vibrant colours, she says, suit the bright skies. Personal subjects belong here too: the first works one Jumeirah villa owner hung were large photographs of her family's flower farm. A family photograph, your garden or your home town can be painted for this wall (paintings from your own image).

Choose the painting before the cushions: in a gold-and-blue Palm Jumeirah villa, the designer picked the living-room cushions to bring out the artwork on the wall, which is far easier than the reverse. Then decide between one large piece and many small ones; an Al Barari collector with more than 400 works switches between the two every three months. For the main sofa wall most families want the single large canvas, and that is where the shops stop short: one Dubai resident wanted a painting the size of a large television, 65–75 inches on the diagonal, and found the furniture stores stocked only smaller pieces. Where does wall art go in an apartment living room in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

On the one long solid wall, usually the one facing the windows or behind the sofa, with a single large canvas or a matched pair rather than a cluster of small frames, and taller work where a branded residence gives you 3.2–4 m of ceiling.

Glass sets the plan in a tower. New apartments are sold on their views, with open-plan living rooms behind floor-to-ceiling glazing like those at Jumeirah Living Business Bay, which leaves one or two solid walls; the one opposite the view is the wall everyone faces when they turn round. Give it one large painting or a matched pair, since a scatter of small frames competes with the skyline.

The ceiling decides how tall it can be. The Dubai Building Code sets a 2.7 m minimum, but branded residences go well beyond it: 3.2 m at Six Senses Residences on the Palm, up to 4 m in the living rooms at Jumeirah Living Business Bay, double height at One at Palm Jumeirah. Plan the way in as well as the wall, because a large canvas has to reach the flat by lift. District by district, the Dubai guide has more.

What suits the dining room and the bedrooms of a UAE villa?

In the formal dining room, a piece that rewards a long look from seated guests at close range; in the bedrooms, calmer and more personal work, with the guest rooms treated as one set in varied palettes.

The formal dining room belongs to the guest side, and in new villas it can be grand: a 2025 Palm Jumeirah villa was built around a double-height dining room. Diners sit close to the wall and stay for hours, so surface counts for more here than in the reception: texture, gold leaf and fine brushwork reward a long look. If the room receives formal guests, keep the subject as calm as the majlis. See art for dining rooms.

Bedrooms are the family's own. The principal suite often sits apart, on the roof of one Palm Jumeirah Garden Home or on the ground floor in some Palm villa layouts, and owners keep their most personal work there: an Emirati filmmaker hangs three paintings by the Iranian painter Bahman Mohassess in his principal suite. Guest bedrooms, three of them in that Garden Home, are easiest as a series: one design, painted in a different palette for each room. Browse art for bedrooms.

How do you plan art for a whole villa with iHomeArt?

Wall by wall on WhatsApp: you send each wall, we suggest a size and designs for it, one canvas can be painted first, and the rest follow in the same hand, each labelled for its room.

Start while the house is still being finished. At the top of the Dubai market an integrated art programme is now standard specification, with new commissions developed alongside the architecture. A family moving into a new villa can do the same on a smaller scale: choose the art while the joinery and lighting go in, and the canvases arrive with the furniture rather than months after it.

For each wall we suggest a size and a shortlist from some 1,300 catalogue designs, or design pieces for the house to your budget, and we keep the guest side in one palette so the reception, majlis and dining room read as one house. Every canvas arrives labelled with its room, with a packing list, and we keep the codes on file in case you add a room later; ten pieces or more reach volume pricing. More on whole-villa projects and art for residential interior designers; the wider picture is in the UAE wall art guide.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

Living room and majlis wall art FAQs

What colours suit a painting for a majlis?

Work from the room's own palette. UAE majlis guides recommend pale beige, cream, taupe and light grey with sand, olive or neutral gold accents, or warm sand, bone, camel and clay with one saturated accent such as olive, oxblood, indigo or bronze. A painting in those tones sits with the furniture; send us daylight photos of the sofa fabric and we mix the palette to them.

Our villa has a men's and a women's majlis. Do we need two paintings?

Usually, yes. They are separate rooms with separate entrances, often with different furniture and light, so one design hung twice rarely suits both. A good approach is two paintings from one family of colours or forms, each sized to its own wall, so the guest side of the house feels consistent while each room keeps its character. Order them together and both are painted in the same hand.

Will a large painting fit in my apartment building's lift?

A large stretched or framed piece needs planning: Dubai towers and gated communities ask for a building-management NOC at least three days ahead, plus a service-lift booking. Send us the lift's inside dimensions with your wall and we suggest the right finish.

How should a painting be lit in a UAE villa?

With warm light aimed at the canvas, not just the room's general glow. An Abu Dhabi majlis guide recommends warm lighting of 2,700–3,000 K, and art-collecting villa owners on Saadiyat ask for layered lighting with high colour rendering on the art. Plan an adjustable spotlight or picture light while the ceiling is still open, so the fitting lands exactly where the painting will hang.

Can my interior designer approve the paintings instead of me?

Yes. The photographs or video of each stage can go straight to whoever approves them: you, your designer or both. A designer can send us drawings, sizes and a palette for each room, and we paint to them; the next stage starts only once the approver says yes, and the final photograph is approved before anything ships.

Can I see the texture of a painting before it ships?

Yes. Every stage is photographed or filmed, and for textured or plaster work you can ask for a side-lit photograph, which shows the ridges and knife marks the way a villa's tall windows will. Heavily textured pieces travel stretched or framed, never rolled, so the relief arrives as you approved it.
