Wall art in Abu Dhabi: canvases for island villas, majlis and offices

iHomeArt paints wall art for Abu Dhabi by hand and to order: original canvases for villas and majlis rooms from Saadiyat and Yas to Khalifa City, and for the capital's offices and hotels, each painted to the size of its wall. Abu Dhabi homes are built for the long term (one design practice says a Saadiyat villa is designed for the family to live in for twenty years), so this guide is about choosing art that stays: the right size, a quieter palette and pieces that belong together.

What kind of wall art suits an Abu Dhabi home?

Art chosen to stay: larger and calmer than a Dubai brief, in creams, golds and earth tones that sit with marble and gilding, with one strong accent rather than a wall of colour.

Designers who work in both cities describe the difference the same way. One practice calls the Abu Dhabi brief “larger, longer, and quieter” than its Dubai equivalent. A studio comparing villas in the two cities finds Abu Dhabi nearer the classical and the Arabic, with boiserie, gilding and mashrabiya, creams and golds, burgundy or forest-green velvet in the majlis, and more ornament in a contemporary villa than in its Dubai twin. In one Abu Dhabi palace interior, the majlis rooms move from warm creams to pale blues and greens with gold-leaf details, and calligraphic pieces sit in alcoves.

That changes what you hang. Against carved panelling and gilt, a calm canvas reads better than a busy one: texture in cream and gold, a desert or sea landscape, or abstraction with a single accent of teal, ochre or green. Take the frame from the room's metal, gold beside gilding and wood beside oak. Not every house is quiet, though: one Abu Dhabi homeowner featured in a design magazine covered her double-height drawing room in paintings, saying she craved colour against the city's sandy tones. If that is your house, give the colour a room of its own and let it be deliberate.

What size of wall art do Abu Dhabi homes need, island by island?

From about 100–150 cm on the one solid wall of an Al Reem apartment to 250 cm and more in the double-height halls of Saadiyat, Hudayriyat and Khalifa City villas.

Many readers are furnishing a new home: Knight Frank counts about 36,900 homes under construction in Abu Dhabi for 2026–2030, led by Yas Island. Size from the wall rather than the bedroom count: the stock varies widely from one island to the next. As a starting point:

WhereThe homesA canvas that suits

Every canvas is painted to its wall, so a catalogue size is only where we start; send a photo or the elevation with the width and ceiling height. Hanging heights and sizes room by room are in the UAE size guide, and the walls of a villa, majlis by majlis, in UAE villas and homes.

What wall art suits a Saadiyat home beside the Louvre?

Abstraction with structure, geometry and letter-like gesture, in quiet stone colours with one accent, on a wall planned for hanging and kept out of direct sun.

By December 2026 Saadiyat's cultural district will hold Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, the Natural History Museum, Zayed National Museum and the Guggenheim, which opens on 11 December. Living next door shapes the brief. One design practice writes that Saadiyat families expect their homes to carry “a similar seriousness of intent”; another, that the Saadiyat brief increasingly resembles a private gallery's, with reinforced hanging walls, layered lighting and daylight control through deep reveals, screens and blinds.

The museums also frame how abstraction is read here. Louvre Abu Dhabi's 2021 exhibition hung Kandinsky and Pollock beside Dia Azzawi and Shakir Hassan Al Said as a “dialogue between images and letters”, and the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation presented 14 Emirati abstract artists in 2024–25 as working with geometry, calligraphy and architecture. For your walls, that suggests abstraction with a structure you can feel: gestures that read like script, geometric fields, carved texture in stone colours with one accent. Plan the fixing and the lighting before the painting, keep it out of direct sun, and let made-to-order canvases carry the corridors and bedrooms in the palette of the piece you collect. Browse geometric paintings.

Who sets the tone for office wall art in Abu Dhabi?

The capital's own institutions: they hang and commission Emirati and Arab artists, so an office here does well to lead with one regional piece and have the rest of the floor painted to its palette.

Where Abu Dhabi's companies and public bodies show their art, it is often local work. International Media Investments hung paintings, sculpture and photography by around a dozen Emirati and Arab artists through its Yas Island headquarters in 2025, with furniture by Emirati designers in its welcome centre. HSBC chose Abu Dhabi Art for the first international showing of its corporate collection and said it wanted Emirati artists represented in it, and in 2024 the city's Abu Dhabi Canvas programme, with Mubadala among its partners, added murals by Emirati artists across the Rabdan district.

For a tenant on Al Maryah or Yas, that suggests a simple plan: one work by an Emirati or regional artist for the reception, bought through a gallery or at the November fair, then canvases painted to the boardroom, meeting rooms and corridors in its colours, so the floor reads as one. How to plan an office floor wall by wall, and what changes for clinics, is on UAE offices and institutions.

Which hotels are opening in Abu Dhabi, and what art will they need?

City hotels, Saadiyat beach hotels and villa resorts on the islands and the coast, announced from 2026 to 2030; each needs a scheme for its public rooms and a set that repeats across every room or villa type.

The announced pipeline runs from the city to the islands and the western coast: Mondrian Abu Dhabi, about 210 suites designed by Tristan Du Plessis, slated for 2026; Nobu Hotel on Saadiyat's Mamsha beach, with 165 rooms and suites, in 2027; then villa resorts, The Ritz-Carlton Reserve on Ramhan Island with 50 villas and The St. Regis at Mirfa with 63 in 2029, and Bvlgari's island resort with 60 rooms and 30 villas in 2030. The dates are the operators' targets.

The classic register still anchors the city. A travel guide describes Emirates Palace's rooms in cream, beige, grey and gold with blues and greens, geometric patterns and carved wood, and Rosewood Abu Dhabi presents its art through Emirati calligraphy, sculpture and installation. We paint to the designer's or art consultant's schedule, room type by room type. The buyers and the scale by space are on UAE hotels and restaurants, and villa resorts on beach resort art.

When is the best time to buy art in Abu Dhabi?

In November, when Frieze Abu Dhabi and NOMAD bring galleries from around the world to the city: buy the piece you collect then, and commission the canvases that go around it.

Abu Dhabi Art ran for 17 editions from 2009 and continues as Frieze Abu Dhabi, on 20–22 November 2026 at Manarat Al Saadiyat; its 2025 edition had 142 exhibitors from 37 countries, by the fair's own count. In the same week of 2025, NOMAD filled the old Terminal 1 of Zayed International Airport with galleries, and its organisers plan to return there each year. It is the best time of year to see Emirati and regional artists together, and to talk to a gallery about a commission from the artist you like.

Go with your walls in mind. A gallery sells a work at the size the artist chose, which may or may not suit a long majlis wall or a stair void, and one collected piece is usually the centre of a room rather than all of it. For everything around it, we suggest catalogue designs, or design new ones, that share its palette without copying it.

  • Take your measurements

Note the width and ceiling height of each wall before the fair, so you know which piece will hold which wall.

  • Photograph what you buy

Send us a daylight photo of it with the other walls, and the rest of the house can be painted to sit with it.

How does an Abu Dhabi order with iHomeArt work?

Send the walls on WhatsApp, approve each stage from photographs, and choose rolled, stretched or framed for the way the canvas reaches the room; every piece arrives labelled for its place.

Start with photographs of the walls, their widths and the ceiling heights; your quote usually arrives within one business day. For a house with two majlis, a dining hall and a stair, have one canvas painted first if you like, approve it, and the rest follow in the same hand. Ten pieces or more reach volume pricing, and we keep every code on file, so a room you finish later can match the first.

Choose the finish for the journey. Heavy relief like the piece pictured travels stretched or framed only, so the texture arrives as it was painted. Every canvas is labelled by room with a packing list, and we arrange shipping on the best route to your address, confirming the cost before dispatch. To have your own view, a crest or a calligrapher's artwork painted, see paintings from your own image.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

Abu Dhabi wall art FAQs

How long does a painting take to reach Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Al Dhafra?

About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Abu Dhabi city, the islands, Al Ain, Al Dhafra or any other address in the emirate. Larger orders, such as a hotel or a whole villa, may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.

Can you paint a copy of a painting I saw at Louvre Abu Dhabi?

Often, yes. Hand-painted reproductions are part of what we do: a work whose copyright has expired can be painted by hand from a good image, at the size your wall needs, while a work still in copyright needs the rights holder's permission first. Nothing is printed, and you approve each stage from photographs before the next one starts.

Can you paint art for a palace or a very large private residence in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. A large house is planned much like a small hotel: send the floor plans or a room schedule with photographs of the main walls, and we suggest sizes and designs room by room, from the catalogue or designed for the house. One canvas can be painted first for approval, and ten pieces or more reach volume pricing.

Do you work with interior designers and fit-out firms in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Send the elevations or the art schedule with the palette; we propose catalogue designs or design pieces for the project, paint them to the approved sizes, and send the photographs of each stage to whoever signs off, whether that is the designer, the client or both. The next stage starts only after that approval.

Can a painting for an Abu Dhabi home be painted in oil?

Yes. Acrylic on canvas is our standard and suits most briefs, including heavily textured work; oil paint is available on request, for example for a classical landscape or a reproduction of an oil painting. Mention it when you send the brief, and the stage photographs show the paint going on just as they do for acrylic.
