What wall art size suits each room in a UAE home?
Roughly 100–150 cm (39–59 in) over an apartment sofa, 150–200 cm (59–79 in) in a villa living room, 250–350 cm (98–138 in) across a majlis wall and 200–300 cm (79–118 in) of height in a double-height void.
Sizes are for the canvas and assume the ceilings you meet most often: 2.7 m, the minimum for living rooms and bedrooms in Dubai, in most flats and townhouses, and 3 m or more in villas.
| Space | Canvas (cm) | Canvas (in) | Format | Hang it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apartment sofa wall, 2.7 m ceiling | 100–150 wide | 39–59 | Horizontal, square or a pair | 20–25 cm above the sofa |
| Villa living room | 150–200 wide | 59–79 | Horizontal or a pair | 20–25 cm above the sofa |
| Majlis wall, about 6 m | 250–350 wide | 98–138 | Panoramic or 2–3 panels | Low, for seated guests |
| Formal reception | 300–500 in total | 118–197 | Panoramic or triptych | Centred on the main seating |
| Double-height foyer or stair void | 200–300 tall | 79–118 | Vertical or a stacked pair | Bottom edge about 100 cm up |
| Dining wall | 150–200 wide | 59–79 | Horizontal or square | Centre about 140 cm |
| Principal suite | 120–150 wide | 47–59 | Horizontal or a pair | 20–30 cm above the headboard |
| Villa corridor | 60 × 90 each | 24 × 35 | 3–5 verticals in a row | Centre about 150 cm |
Torn between two rows? Tape out the larger size first: on a UAE wall, a painting chosen on a screen nearly always looks smaller.
How do you measure a wall for a painting?
Measure four things: the clear ceiling height, the free width of the wall, the furniture in front of it and where people will sit or stand to see it, then tape the outline on the wall before you order.
Measure the run you can actually use: a wall that looks generous on a plan is often broken by a door, a switch, an air-conditioning grille or a curtain stack. Then tape the size you have in mind on the wall, sit on the sofa or stand in the doorway, and look; send us a photo of the outline and we will tell you whether to go up or down.
A television makes a handy ruler. One Dubai resident went looking for a painting of 65–75 inches on the diagonal, about the size of a large TV: a 75-inch screen is about 166 × 93 cm (65 × 37 in), fair for a 2.7 m living room and small for a villa’s. As a rule, a canvas wants a width of a third to a half of the distance it is seen from: about 150 cm from 4 m, 250–300 cm from 6 m.

What size painting goes above a sofa, a bed or a dining table?
About two-thirds of the furniture’s width, with the bottom edge 20–25 cm above a sofa back and 20–30 cm above a headboard.
Two-thirds ties the painting to the furniture without crowding it:
- Sofa. A 220 cm three-seater takes about 150 cm (59 in); a 300 cm sectional about 200 cm (79 in), or a pair of 90–100 cm (35–39 in) canvases.
- Bed. A 180 cm king takes 120–135 cm (47–53 in), a 200 cm super-king 135–150 cm (53–59 in); measure from the top of the headboard, not the mattress.
- Dining table. A 240 cm table for eight takes about 160 cm (63 in), hung a little lower for seated diners.
Over a sofa the limit is usually height. Under a 2.7 m ceiling, an 85 cm sofa back, a 20–25 cm gap and a similar margin below the ceiling leave room for a canvas about 135 cm tall at most, and 90–120 cm looks better. At 3.2 m, as in some branded residences on the Palm, a 150 cm-tall canvas sits comfortably. Browse living room, bedroom and dining room art.
What size painting does a majlis wall need?
A panoramic canvas or a two- to three-panel set of about 250–350 cm (98–138 in) across a six-metre wall, hung low enough to be read by guests who are seated.
The majlis is where UAE homes most often under-size their art. One Abu Dhabi practice describes majlis rooms with six-metre spans, four-metre ceilings and seating along three walls. With sofas along most of each wall, the painting goes above the seating, at half to two-thirds of the length of the sofa run beneath it: on a six-metre wall, 250–350 cm.
Guests read it sitting down. Majlis seats are usually 40–45 cm high, which puts seated eyes at about 110–120 cm, so keep the canvas long rather than tall, 80–120 cm high (31–47 in), with its bottom edge 20–25 cm above the sofa backs; under a 3.5–4 m ceiling, the wall above belongs to the chandeliers and cornice. Emirati family villas often have two such rooms, a men’s and a women’s majlis: size each wall on its own, and where a door breaks the run, use panels. Subjects are on UAE taste and styles.
How big should art be in a double-height foyer or stair void?
Tall: a vertical of 200–300 cm (79–118 in), or a stacked pair, with the bottom edge about 100 cm from the floor so the painting belongs to the people in the hall, not to the ceiling.
Double-height spaces are not only for mansions: some Palm Jumeirah villa layouts run a double-height foyer through the centre of the house, and Dubai listings advertise double-height living rooms in four-bedroom townhouses too. Under 4.5–6 m, a 150 cm canvas looks like a postage stamp.
- Size by the height. Fill about half of it: 200–250 cm under 4.5 m, 250–300 cm under 6 m, or two stacked canvases 8–10 cm apart.
- Anchor it low. Keep the bottom edge about 90–110 cm from the floor, as if a console stood beneath it.
- Check the second view. Look from the landing too; the upper half of the composition has to hold up from there.
On a stair wall, centre the work on the middle of the flight, about 150 cm above the steps at that point. See vertical wall art.
What wall art size works in a Dubai or Abu Dhabi apartment?
Usually 100–150 cm (39–59 in) on the one solid living-room wall under a 2.7 m ceiling, and 150–200 cm (59–79 in) where a branded residence gives you 3.2 m or more.
UAE apartments are planned around the view: in many towers the living and dining area runs along floor-to-ceiling glass, so the art wall is the solid one opposite, often shared with the television. A two-bedroom on Al Reem Island measures about 1,345–1,835 sq ft, and its living wall takes a 100–150 cm horizontal, a 120 cm (47 in) square or a pair of 80–100 cm (31–39 in) canvases.
Then think about the way in. Heavily textured work travels stretched or framed only, so in a tower it is often better as a pair.
When should one large canvas become a set of panels?
When the wall runs past about three metres, when a door or column breaks it, or when one canvas would not get through the lift or up the stair; otherwise a single canvas reads calmer.
One canvas is calmer and suits most walls up to about 2.5–3 m. Beyond that, a diptych or triptych painted as one composition fills the wall as well and is far easier to deliver and hang. The widest rooms need it most: the formal salon of a Dubai villa seats fourteen or more, and its long wall wants 300–500 cm of painting in total.
Count the gaps: three 100 × 120 cm canvases with 6 cm between them run 312 cm (123 in), not 300. Keep the panels the same height, align their edges and centre the set on the sofa or the head seat. In a villa corridor, three to five evenly spaced 60 × 90 cm (24 × 35 in) verticals do the same job; for hotels, see corridor art in series.
Gaps of 5–8 cm
Close enough for the panels to read as one painting, wide enough for each canvas to breathe.
One picture, or a rhythm
A set painted as one composition hangs as a single work; separate pictures in one palette read as a series.
How high should you hang a painting in a UAE home?
With its centre about 150 cm (59 in) from the floor where people stand, lower where they sit, and with the bottom edge 20–30 cm above any furniture beneath it.
To place it, mark the centre height on the wall and measure half the canvas height up and down from it: a 100 cm-tall canvas centred at 150 cm runs from 100 to 200 cm. Plan the light too. Collectors’ villas on Saadiyat are now designed with reinforced hanging walls, layered lighting on the art and daylight held back by blinds and screens, and Abu Dhabi majlis schemes favour warm 2,700–3,000 K light, which flatters gold and warm neutrals.
Can a painting be made to the exact size of your wall?
Yes: send us a photo of the wall with its width and the ceiling height, and we suggest the size, format and finish, then paint the design you choose to those dimensions.
The standard sizes on each catalogue design are starting points. Choose from some 1,300 designs and we repaint the composition for your proportions rather than simply enlarging it, so a design you like can often become a panoramic for a majlis; or we design a piece for the wall. For a whole villa, one canvas can be painted first and the rest follow once you approve it. Tell us how the piece will reach the room, by lift, stair or door, and we suggest rolled, stretched or framed to suit.
See also paintings from your own image, oversized wall art, villas and homes in the UAE and the UAE wall art guide.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.
Wall art size guide FAQs
What are the standard canvas sizes in cm and inches?
Our catalogue lists each design in standard sizes; for a typical rectangle they include 61 × 51 cm (24 × 20 in), 102 × 76 cm (40 × 30 in), 153 × 102 cm (60 × 40 in) and 203 × 153 cm (80 × 60 in). One inch is 2.54 cm. Panoramic and square designs have their own steps, and any design can be painted between or beyond them.
Should a painting be horizontal, vertical or square?
Follow the wall and what stands in front of it. Horizontal suits sofas, beds, sideboards and majlis seating; vertical suits narrow walls between doors or windows, consoles, voids and stairwells; a square holds a niche. Most designs can be repainted in another format, with the composition redrawn rather than cropped, and we tell you if one will not translate.
Can I choose art sizes for an off-plan villa before handover?
Yes. Off-plan homes come with floor plans; one Saadiyat Lagoons villa listed in September 2026 is due for handover in the third quarter of 2027. Ask for ceiling heights and wall elevations, shortlist designs and sizes now, and confirm the dimensions once the walls are up. In Dubai’s top villas, designers now develop new commissions alongside the architecture.
Does a frame change the size I should order?
A little. The sizes in this guide are for the canvas, and a frame adds its own width around it, so allow for that where the wall is tight. Framed pieces come in gold, silver, black, white or wood and arrive ready to hang; a stretched canvas without a frame takes no extra width.
What size of painting suits a hotel room or an office in the UAE?
In a hotel guest room, one canvas of about 100–150 cm (39–59 in) above the headboard is the usual answer, while suites can need far more: The Lana’s top suites in Dubai are duplexes with double-height corner living rooms. Offices go larger: reception and boardroom walls often take 200–300 cm (79–118 in), and Mubadala’s corporate collection bought a 204 × 325 cm triptych.
Can one design be painted in several sizes for different rooms?
Yes. A villa or an office floor often uses one design or palette at several sizes: a panoramic for the reception, a vertical for the stair, a square for a guest room. Each size is repainted for its own proportions, and we keep the order codes on file, so a matching piece can be painted later. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces.
