About this painting

A pale sun sits right on the horizon, dividing a sky of turquoise and lemon-yellow cloud from a sea that runs from jade green to deep cobalt.

The sky is the liveliest part, its clouds outlined in blue and filled with saturated yellow, thin white rays fanning down from the top edge. A stripe of red-orange and a lilac haze lie along the horizon behind a navy headland. Below, a broken yellow reflection drops through the water, a line of white foam curves in, and a chocolate-brown rock anchors the lower right corner. Thinly brushed paint lets the canvas weave show through in places.

Yes. It was conceived as an evening scene, but the low sun, the warm band along the horizon and the long reflection would look the same at daybreak, so it can be presented as morning light in a breakfast room or as the close of the day in a bedroom.

Why is the rock in the corner of CA#1170 painted so dark?
