About this painting

Viewed from high overhead, a strip of beach runs from turquoise surf at the top of the canvas down to warm peach sand, scattered with small swimmers and walkers in orange and red. Three striped umbrellas, two yellow-orange and one coral, stand where the foam meets the shore.

The surface is sculpted: wave crests rise as curled white ridges and the sand is built in overlapping knife-cut plates of cream, apricot and ochre, so the beach looks rippled by the tide even from across a room. Much of the lower half is left to that bare sand, giving the figures space to walk.
