About this painting

A hummingbird hangs in mid-air above a splash, wings raised and long beak aimed into a spray of water droplets thrown up from the surface below. Its back and crown are teal, its breast warm rust and peach, and its wings fan out in amber and blue.

The droplets are the most worked part of the surface: dozens of round, raised beads, some clear and glassy, some tinted gold. Pink blossoms and yellow-green leaves press in from the top left in heavy impasto, and the background slides from pale mint at the top right to deep teal, ending in dark blue water with white-crested ripples.
