About this painting

Turquoise sea meets a rust-brown beach along one long, scalloped line of thick white surf that curves from a distant breakwater to the bottom of the canvas. That surf is the raised part of the picture: white paint heaped and dragged into foamy ridges, tinted pale gold where it thins over wet sand.

Above, a coral-pink sky fades to lilac at the horizon, with a small lighthouse capped in ochre and red at the end of a dark jetty on the left and a pale moon on the right. The sea is painted flatter, in short white flecks that build to one breaking crest at the right edge.
