A white wave curls in from the lower left and spills its foam onto a curve of orange sand, under a small yellow sun set in ochre cloud. The upper half is built in calm stripes: pale blue sky, glowing cloud, a violet haze and a strip of bright blue sea.

Below the sea the picture tilts. Lavender-grey wet sand is streaked with charcoal, a gold track of reflected light runs toward the foam, and the wave cuts across on a diagonal, dark in its face and piled white at the crest. Colours are pared to near-blocks, more a remembered evening shore than one particular beach.
