About this painting

Two gold sunbursts, one on black and one on cream, radiate from ringed centres across a pair of tall panels, each the reverse of the other.

On the left, a black disc sits inside a gold ring and gold spokes spread across a dark ground; on the right the order flips, with a gold dot inside a white halo and spokes running out over cream. Every spoke is a narrow raised line, with fine grooves of ground showing between them. Faint concentric rings pulse through the spokes at intervals, like ripples spreading on water.

Does the black sunburst work without its cream partner?

It holds up on its own, since each design is complete, but the two were composed as opposites. The black panel alone looks dramatic and inward-turning; the cream one alone is lighter and more decorative. Hung together they balance each other, which is how they read best.

Is the motif a sun, an eye or something else?
