About this painting

A full gold sun hangs in the middle of a black square, its smooth inner disc wrapped in a wide halo of swirling brushwork. The halo carries the weight: thick gold strokes dragged around the centre in loose rings, with black breaking through in streaks, densest at the lower left and right where the ring frays into the dark ground.

The inner disc, by contrast, is laid almost flat, with only faint scuffs crossing it, so it reads as a calm, glowing face. The black field around it is matte and slightly grainy, which makes the gold look brighter still.
