Gold rings spiral outward from a small dark core set above and left of centre, like ripples spreading across still grey water. The gold is laid in broad, broken bands with a soft sheen, darkening to bronze and olive where it is scraped thin, and it never quite closes into neat circles: the outer ring splits into loose arcs near the top right.

Around them the ground is mottled grey and white, worked with the knife into a rough, frosted texture flecked with dark specks. The corners stay pale and open, so the rings seem to float on the canvas rather than fill it.
