About this painting

Gold flakes drift across a soft grey wash, thick in the top left corner, scattered loosely through the middle and gathering again into a dense, darker patch at the bottom right.

Underneath, the grey is built from overlapping vertical drags and pale rectangular blocks, taupe over dove grey, like a rain-streaked window. The ground is flat and thinly painted, so all of the surface interest comes from the flakes, which turn from pale yellow-gold to bronze as the light changes. The top right and lower left are left almost empty.

Why is the gold heavier in two corners of AA#536?

The dense clusters at top left and bottom right sit on one diagonal, with a looser trail of flakes linking them across the middle. That gives the grey field a slow movement from corner to corner instead of an even sprinkle, and it leaves the other two corners open.
