Wall art size guide for Oman: what size suits each room?
In most Omani rooms, a canvas about two-thirds the width of the seating, bed or table below it, hung 20–30 cm (8–12 in) above it; the chart gives each room in centimetres and inches.
Two measurements decide almost every size: the width of the furniture below the painting and the height of the room. As a guide, Oman's 2017 building rules for mixed residential and commercial plots set residential floors at 2.8–3.4 m, which leaves more wall above a sofa than the 2.4 m rooms most international size charts assume. Start from the furniture, then check the result against the ceiling.
| Room | Canvas (cm) | Canvas (inches) | Format | How to hang it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Majlis with floor seating or day beds | 180–250 wide | 71–98 wide | Panoramic; three panels on a wall over 5 m | Lower edge 20–30 cm (8–12 in) above the backrest |
| Living room or majlis with sofas | 150–220 wide | 59–87 wide | Horizontal, or a pair | 20–30 cm above the sofa back |
| Family sitting room | 120–180 wide | 47–71 wide | Horizontal, square or a gallery wall | Centre about 150 cm (59 in) |
| Dining wall | 120–180 wide | 47–71 wide | Horizontal | Centre about 140 cm (55 in) |
| Entrance hall | 100–150 tall | 39–59 tall | Vertical | Centre about 150 cm (59 in) |
| Double-height foyer or stair wall | 200–300 tall | 79–118 tall | Tall vertical, or a stacked set | A little above eye level |
| Principal bedroom | 120–150 wide | 47–59 wide | Horizontal, or a pair | 20–30 cm above the headboard |
| Guest or children's room | 80–120 | 31–47 | Any | Centre about 145 cm (57 in) |
Sizes are for the canvas; a frame adds a little on every side. We paint to your measurements, so each range is a starting point, not a limit. Flats, hotels and offices follow below; the ceiling-by-ceiling view is in the Oman wall art guide.
How wide and how high should a painting hang above majlis seating?
Across about two-thirds of the seating on that wall, with its lower edge 20–30 cm above the back cushions; on floor seating that puts its centre near 130–140 cm (51–55 in), lower than in a hall.
An Omani majlis seats eight or more on floor seating or day beds, dressed with rich cushions and a low table. Guests sit for a long time, so size the painting for seated eyes:
- Width. About two-thirds of the seating run below it: 3 m of cushions take a canvas about 200 cm (79 in) wide; a 4.5 m run, 250 cm (98 in) or more, or three panels hung 5–8 cm (2–3 in) apart.
- Height. 80–120 cm (31–47 in) tall under a 2.8–3.4 m ceiling: a panoramic two or three times as wide as it is tall runs with the seats, where a tall vertical fights them.
- Hanging height. Lower edge 20–30 cm (8–12 in) above the back cushions. Floor-seating backrests often stop near 60 cm, so a 100 cm canvas centres at about 130–140 cm (51–55 in); over day beds or sofas, about 145–155 cm (57–61 in).
The room's palette and subjects are covered in Omani villas and the majlis.
Three walls of seating
One panoramic on the wall guests face as they enter; a smaller matched pair on the side walls, hung at the same height.
A verse or calligraphy panel
Send us the calligrapher's artwork with the wall size and we suggest the proportion and margins; ask a native reader to check the stage photographs before you approve.
What wall art size suits a new flat or villa in Sultan Haitham City or Al Mouj?
Size by the home you are moving into: 80–120 cm (31–47 in) as the main piece in a studio or one-bedroom flat, 120–180 cm (47–71 in) in larger flats and townhouses, and a set led by a 180–250 cm (71–98 in) canvas in a villa.
Much of Muscat's new housing is sold with published floor areas, so the art can be planned before the keys arrive. Sultan Haitham City is planned for 20,000 homes. In its Wadi Zaha neighbourhood the flats run from 50 m² studios through 75 m² one-bedroom and 110 m² two-bedroom flats to 155 m² three-bedrooms and penthouses of 170–185 m², with 210 m² townhouses alongside. At Al Mouj, the new Amara villas have five bedrooms in 455 m² and the Alaya lakeside villas six in more than 900 m².
Moving in from bare walls? Measure once the walls are painted and the main furniture chosen, and order the home together: ten pieces or more reach volume pricing, and each wall still gets its own size.

Which canvas fills a double-height foyer, a stair wall or a 4-metre ceiling?
A tall vertical of 200–300 cm (79–118 in), or two or three canvases stacked, centred a little above eye level as you see it from the door or the landing.
Tall walls turn up in three places. Some villas open on a double-height lobby: one coastal villa in Muscat hangs a large painting in its entrance. Newer villas stack floors on small plots: one Sultan Haitham City villa has three floors and a roof terrace on a 400 m² plot, so its stair wall climbs three storeys. And the ground floor of a mixed residential and commercial building is 4–4.8 m high: the walls of showrooms, clinics and cafés.
- Foyer. A vertical 120–150 cm wide and 200–300 cm tall (47–59 × 79–118 in), centred a little above eye level as seen from the front door.
- Stair wall. One tall canvas centred on the half-landing, or two or three stacked 8–10 cm (3–4 in) apart and stepped with the stair.
- A 4 m ground floor. 200–250 cm (79–98 in) on the long side for the main wall; at that height a 1 m canvas looks like a postage stamp.
For anything larger, send us the wall and the way in, and we suggest one piece or panels. See tall vertical works and oversized and custom sizes.
What painting size goes above a bed, a sofa or a dining table in an Omani home?
About two-thirds of the furniture's width: a 180 cm (71 in) king bed takes a canvas of about 120 cm (47 in), a 240 cm (94 in) sofa about 160 cm (63 in), and a dining wall a piece hung lower, for seated eyes.
The family side of a villa, from the living and dining room and the family sitting area to the bedrooms upstairs, is where paintings are lived with. The two-thirds rule holds throughout:
- Bed. 100–110 cm (39–43 in) over a 160 cm queen, 120–135 cm (47–53 in) over a 180–200 cm king, lower edge 20–30 cm above the headboard; a pair of 50 × 70 cm (20 × 28 in) canvases over twin beds.
- Sofa. Two-thirds to three-quarters of its length: 150–180 cm (59–71 in) over a 240 cm three-seater; on an L-shaped sofa, the longer side.
- Dining wall. About two-thirds of the table's length, centred near 140 cm (55 in) so it reads from the chairs.
Calm palettes for sleeping are in art for bedrooms, and ideas for the table in art for dining rooms.

One large canvas, a pair, a triptych or a gallery wall?
One canvas for an unbroken wall, a pair or triptych for a long or interrupted wall, and a gallery wall for a family room that gathers pieces over time.
Single large pieces and groups both have a place in Omani rooms: one majlis guide on an Oman lifestyle blog suggests simple, large-format frames, or a gallery wall in matching frames.
- One canvas is the calmest choice for an unbroken wall: a majlis head wall, the wall behind a sofa, a foyer.
- A pair or triptych suits a wall longer than about 4 m, a wall split by a window or door, or a stair. Size the set as one canvas, then divide it with 5–8 cm (2–3 in) gaps.
- A gallery wall of five to nine pieces suits a family room, study or corridor: equal gaps, centres or one edge in line, and the whole block about two-thirds the width of the furniture below.
Panels for one wall are painted as one composition, in one hand and palette, so they read as one work; see panoramic works.
What wall art sizes do Omani hotel rooms, corridors and offices take?
100–150 cm (39–59 in) above a guest bed, a run of 50–80 cm (20–31 in) pieces on one theme along a corridor, and 200 cm (79 in) or more for a lobby or reception wall.
The 2024 openings in Muscat show how hotel sizes divide. Corridors take a run on one theme: Mandarin Oriental, Muscat hangs its guest corridors with oil paintings of the Jebel Akhdar rose harvest. Where a guest-room headboard is itself a design feature, as in the same hotel, whose headboards are inspired by the kuma, the Omani cap, keep the canvas smaller or hang it facing the bed. The public rooms run larger: The St. Regis Al Mouj hangs an expansive Hassan Meer mural of Muttrah in its bar, and Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Ghala has a 630 m² pillar-free ballroom, where walls are measured in metres rather than centimetres.
Hotel orders are counted by room type: one size and one design family for each type, repeated floor by floor, with one sample first if you want it. More on hotels and restaurants in Oman and offices and institutions; runs of matching pieces in corridor art series.

How do you measure a wall in Oman and order a canvas painted to fit?
Send us a straight-on photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and the furniture below; we suggest a size in centimetres and inches, paint it to that size, and you approve each stage from photographs.
Four numbers are enough: the wall's width, the ceiling height, the width of the furniture below and the height of its back or headboard. Add the narrowest door, stair turn or lift on the way in, and test a size by taping paper of that size to the wall. Al Mouj alone has residents of 94 nationalities, so we work in centimetres or inches, whichever you measured in.
Send it on WhatsApp, through the quote form or by email. We suggest a size and a shortlist from some 1,300 designs, design a piece for the room, or paint one from your own image to your measurements.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.
Oman wall art size guide FAQs
What are the standard canvas sizes in centimetres and inches?
Common sizes include 50 × 70 cm (20 × 28 in), 60 × 90 cm (24 × 35 in), 80 × 120 cm (31 × 47 in), 100 × 150 cm (39 × 59 in), 120 × 180 cm (47 × 71 in) and panoramics such as 80 × 240 cm (31 × 94 in). Because every iHomeArt canvas is painted to order, these are only a guide: give us the size your wall needs.
Should I give you the size of the canvas or of the frame?
Tell us which you mean. Our sizes are for the canvas; a frame adds a little on every side. If the painting must fit a fixed space, such as a niche or the gap between two windows, give us that outer size and the frame you like, and we size the canvas to sit inside it.
Will a large stretched canvas fit in my lift or up my stairs?
Measure the lift door and cabin and the tightest turn of the stair before you decide. Where the route is tight, two or three panels hung as one are often the easier answer.
Can a catalogue painting be made wider or taller than shown?
Yes. Every design can be painted at another size, and when the proportion changes, from vertical to panoramic for a majlis wall for example, the composition is redrawn for the new shape rather than stretched or cropped. You see the new layout in the stage photographs and approve it before the next stage starts.
How is a large painting for an Omani wall priced?
Each piece is priced for its size and finish, rolled, stretched or framed. Shipping is separate: we arrange it on the best route to your address in Muscat, Salalah, Sohar or elsewhere and confirm the cost before dispatch. Your quote usually arrives within one business day, volume pricing starts at ten pieces, and we are glad to suggest where a different size or finish saves money.
