Which of the art shops in Muscat suits your wall?
It depends on the job: home stores for a quick ready-made piece, framers for finishing, galleries and the art fair for a named artist, private sellers for a one-off, and a studio that paints to order once the wall outgrows the shelves.
Muscat has many places selling something for a wall and few selling paintings. An August 2025 guide to the city's art scene names just two galleries, alongside the Omani Society for Fine Arts and a handful of museums, and notes that one of Oman's first contemporary galleries closed in March 2025. For most buyers, then, the first stop is a home store, where the choice is wide in style and narrow in size.
| Kind of seller | What you find | Largest size | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home and furniture stores | Printed canvas, framed calligraphy and verses, glass art; a few canvases labelled hand-painted | Mostly 1.2–1.8 m on the long side; one chain stocks 2.5 m | A flat, a guest room, a quick change |
| Framers | Framing for what you bring; some print large formats | Whatever you bring | Stretching and framing a rolled canvas |
| Galleries and the art fair | Works by named Omani and Gulf artists, from heritage scenes to abstraction | Priced stock mostly under 1.6 m; larger works on request | The piece you collect; a lobby's centrepiece |
| Private sellers and artists' studios | One-off originals, small works, portraits to order | Usually under 1 m; the odd large oil | A single piece you can see in person |
| Made to order | Any design, size and palette, or a set painted in one hand | Painted to the wall | Majlis walls, tall voids, whole villas, hotel and office floors |
Start from the right-hand column: a framed verse for a guest room is a mall purchase; a canvas the width of a majlis, or eight paintings that belong together, is not. The wider picture is in our Oman wall art guide.
When is an art gallery in Muscat the right place to buy?
When you want a named Omani or Gulf artist's own work: the piece you collect, or the centrepiece of a lobby or boardroom, at the size the artist painted it.
Anwar Sonya, Hassan Meer, Radhika Khimji and Budoor Al Riyami were among the artists in the country's first Venice Biennale pavilion in 2022, and Sonya is often called the godfather of modern Omani art. Expect heritage as well as abstraction: a 2025 show at the Omani Society for Fine Arts hung watercolours of mountains, coastlines, old villages and weddings, while younger painters work in bold blocks of colour or layer calligraphy over photographs. Hotels buy at this level for their public rooms: The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat hangs Sonya, Meer and the calligrapher Fahad Al Balushi, among others.
A gallery sells a work at the size the artist chose, and its largest canvases are usually priced on request; if nothing in stock fits your wall, ask about a commission from the artist. For a whole villa or office floor, a practical mix is one named piece for the wall visitors remember and made-to-order canvases in the same palette for the rest.
What do the home stores in Muscat sell, and how large does it go?
Printed canvas, framed Islamic calligraphy and glass art, mostly 1.2 to 1.8 metres on the long side; a few canvases carry a hand-painted label, and the largest single canvas on a Muscat shelf is about 2.5 metres.
The home and furniture chains in Muscat's malls do one job well: a ready-made piece, today, for a standard wall. Framed verses make up much of one large chain's range, printed canvases and multi-piece sets another's, framed and glass prints a third's. That suits much of the market: a 2025 ArtReview essay reports artists at Oman's Affordable Art Show finding local taste running to small decorative prints and objects.
The shelves stop at size and colour. Above about 1.8 metres the choice falls to a handful of designs, none beyond 2.5 metres, in the palette the store ordered rather than the one in your room. One majlis design guide written in Oman suggests calligraphy in gold or silver foil and large-format frames against sandy beige, terracotta and dusty rose; in a majlis long enough to seat eight or more, the wall above the seating wants a canvas of about 2 to 2.5 metres in exactly those tones, which is where the stores stop being an option. If you run a framing or décor shop in Muscat, see art for galleries and framers.
How can you tell whether a canvas is really hand-painted?
Look at it closely and in side light: paint leaves ridges, brush marks and small variations that a print cannot, and anyone painting to order can show you the canvas at each stage.
‘Hand-painted’ appears on mall price tickets in Muscat as well as in galleries, so the label alone tells you little. Three checks work anywhere:
- Side light. Shine a phone torch across the surface. Brush and knife marks throw small shadows and vary from stroke to stroke; a print stays flat, or repeats the same embossed texture.
- Up close. Zoom in with a phone camera. A print breaks into a fine pattern of dots; paint does not.
- The process. Ask for photographs of the work in progress. A painter who made it can show you; a reseller usually cannot.
With iHomeArt you never have to guess. Every canvas is painted by hand and nothing is printed; you receive photographs or video at each stage, and a side-lit photograph of the texture if you ask, so you see the brushwork before you approve the next step. See our textured paintings.
Is it safe to buy a painting from a private seller or an artist's studio in Oman?
Yes, for a piece you can see in person or an artist you can talk to; agree the size, medium and delivery in writing first, because returns in Oman cover faults, not a change of mind.
Classified sites carry everything from framed floral pieces to the occasional large oil offered for villas, majlis rooms and hotels, and a handful of artist-run studios and small galleries have opened in Muscat since 2018. One muralist profiled in 2026 takes commissions across the Sultanate for walls, ceilings and private canvases; a mural suits a painting that belongs to the building, a canvas one that should move with you.
Your protection is what you agree. Ask any seller for the delivery date and method and the return policy in writing before you pay. So before you pay anyone, ask for the size in centimetres, the medium, a daylight photograph and how the piece will reach you. Our terms are just as plain: you approve a photograph of the finished canvas before it ships, so finished pieces are not returnable; transit damage is rare, under 0.01% of pieces, and if it happens we take it up with the carrier and work out a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund.
When should you commission a painting instead of buying one in Muscat?
When the wall needs more than about 2 metres of canvas, a colour no shop stocks, a set that belongs together or a subject that is yours alone; outside Muscat, also when there is simply no shop nearby.
Any one of the four signals below is reason enough. Timing matters too: Muscat's interior and fit-out studios rarely mention art among their services, so art is often left until after handover. One Muscat fit-out firm puts a standard office fit-out at two to four months; choose the art while the joinery goes in and there is time to paint it before you move in.
Hotels plan this way at a larger scale: Mandarin Oriental, Muscat describes its guest corridors as hung with pastel-pink oil paintings of the Jebel Akhdar rose harvest, one theme across many canvases. For a verse, start from a calligrapher's artwork, used with their permission, and have a native reader check the stage photographs; for your view, village or crest, send us the image with the wall size and we suggest the size, format and finish (see paintings from your own image). Outside Muscat the choice narrows to branches of the home chains, so in Salalah, Sohar or Nizwa a canvas painted to the wall and sent by express courier is often the simplest way to a large original.

How do you order a painting for a wall in Oman from iHomeArt?
Send a photo of the wall and its width on WhatsApp; we suggest a size and designs, quote usually within one business day, and you approve every stage from photographs before the canvas ships.
Start with the wall rather than the catalogue: a photograph, the width and the ceiling height are enough. We suggest a size and a shortlist from some 1,300 designs, or design a piece for your project; order one canvas first if you like, and the rest of a set once you have approved it.
Larger orders may go by air or sea freight, on the route we find best for your address, with the shipping cost confirmed before dispatch. For a large framed piece, logistics firms in Muscat and Salalah advertise white-glove delivery that carries artwork inside and unpacks it. Sizes for Omani rooms are in the Oman size guide; the walls of a home, room by room, in villas and majlis.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.
Art shops in Muscat FAQs
When is Muscat's art fair?
Muscat Art, the country's art fair, is held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre; the 2026 edition runs 28–30 October. The fair reports more than 200 artists from over 12 countries and more than 1,000 artworks in 2025. It is the easiest time to see Omani and Gulf work in one place and meet artists about commissions.
How do I see an iHomeArt painting before it reaches Oman?
Through photographs and video at every stage. Every piece is painted to order for your wall, so you see your own canvas, not a sample on a shelf: the next stage starts only after you approve, and the final photograph is approved before it ships. If you are planning a set, one canvas can be painted first as your sample.
Can you paint a larger version of a painting I saw in a Muscat shop?
If the design is an artist's work still in copyright, we need the rights holder's permission before we paint it. Otherwise, send us a photo of what you liked and the size of your wall: we suggest catalogue designs in the same spirit and paint the one you choose at the size the wall needs, or design a new piece for you.
How long does a painting take to reach Muscat or Salalah?
About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Muscat, Salalah, Sohar, Nizwa or any other address in Oman. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.
Can I order just one painting for an apartment in Muscat?
Yes. The minimum order is one piece, so a single canvas for a flat in Al Mouj, Qurum or Sultan Haitham City is welcome, and it can double as a sample if you plan more. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces, for a villa set, an office floor or a run of hotel rooms.
How do I pay for a painting ordered from Oman?
Half upfront against a proforma invoice, so painting can start, and the other half once you approve the photograph of the finished piece, before it ships. Your quote, priced for your sizes and finishes, usually arrives within one business day of your message on WhatsApp, through the quote form or by email.
