About this painting

A dark smudge of black ink stands in the centre of a cream canvas, half figure and half shadow, its edges dragged sideways into streaks as if glimpsed through rain or a moving train window.

Above the main mass floats a small separate blot, like a hat brim or a bird in flight, and a second smudge hangs to the left. Every mark is pulled horizontally with a dry brush, leaving grain where the bristles skipped, and the black thins to warm grey wherever it was dragged furthest. The streaks fade out toward the bottom edge, so the shape seems to stand on nothing.

WA#004 is an original wabi-sabi figurative painting showing smudged black ink mass suggesting a standing figure on cream ground, hand-painted in acrylic on canvas. It is painted to order in any size; the 14 standard sizes run from 20×24 in (51×61 cm) to 60×80 in (153×203 cm). Painting takes about 10 days and delivery 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS; the minimum order is one piece.

Where it works

Black on cream reads from the far end of a long corridor or from the street through a shop window, so it can hold a wall people see well before they reach it. Raw plaster, blackened steel, walnut and natural stone suit its ink-and-paper palette. In a living room it sits best alone on its wall, with nothing else dark nearby to compete. Cold white light turns the cream grey; warm, even light keeps the ground the colour of old paper.

Specified for corridor & circulation, gallery & retail, entryway & hallway and living room; it reads as moody and dramatic.

Sizes & scale

Width × height. These are the sizes ordered most often; any other size is painted to order, with the composition redrawn to your proportions. A common rule: art about two-thirds the width of the sofa, bed or console beneath it.

What affects the price

Trade prices for WA#004 are quoted per order rather than listed, and come back within one business day. Four things set the figure:

Size
Price follows canvas area. The standard sizes run from 20×24 in to 60×80 in; any other size is quoted the same way.
Finish
Rolled canvas is the lowest-cost way to buy and ship. Stretched, ready to hang, costs more, and a frame costs the most.
Surface
Flat brushwork takes less paint and time than impasto or relief work of the same size.
Quantity
Volume pricing starts at 10 pieces: the same design for every room on a floor, each one painted individually, or a mix of works.

Shipping is not included in the price; its cost is confirmed with you before the piece ships. Ask for a price on WA#004 on WhatsApp →

Questions buyers ask

Is the black ink shape on cream meant to be a person?

It is left unresolved. The central mass reads as a figure standing or walking, perhaps in a wide hat, with a second smudge beside it, but every edge is dragged sideways, so no face or limb is defined. Viewers finish the figure themselves, and different people see different things.

How were the sideways streaks through the black ink made?

With a dry brush pulled across the canvas from side to side, passing through the black as well as the cream. That smears the ink into horizontal bands, leaves a fine grain where the bristles skipped and gives the figure its blurred, in-motion look. The surface stays nearly flat.

Is WA#004 a print or an original painting?

An original. WA#004 is hand-painted in acrylic on canvas when you order it — nothing in the iHomeArt catalogue is printed or held in stock. The photographs show an earlier canvas of the same design, so the brushwork on yours will differ slightly.

Will several copies of WA#004 match across rooms?

They read as a set: every copy is painted from the same composition and palette. Each one is still painted by hand, so the brushwork differs slightly from piece to piece. Progress photos at each stage let you compare them before the next stage starts, and volume pricing begins at 10 pieces.

Will the colours match what I see on screen?

Screens shift colour, so the photographs here are a guide rather than a swatch. You see progress photos or video at each stage and approve a photograph of the finished canvas before it leaves. Moving the palette towards your scheme is normal: send a photo of a paint chip, a fabric swatch or the room on WhatsApp.
