About this painting

Two slender figures walk side by side out of a field of rough white plaster, one painted solid black, the other made only of grey stippled crust.

The black figure stands slightly in front and to the right, its narrow head and squared shoulders cut cleanly. Behind the pair, blocks of white, a black slab at the top right and a dark band down the right edge build an abstract doorway, with grey wedges slipped between the planes. The plaster is sculpted in relief with torn, crinkled edges, so the white areas carry a fine surface pattern that shifts as the light moves.
