About this painting

Rafts of lily pads in coral, cream and butter yellow drift across a pond of blue and lavender, with a scatter of orange blooms opening among them. There is no bank and no sky: water seen from slightly above fills the square edge to edge, so it behaves almost like a pattern.

The pads gather in two bands, one across the upper third and a denser cluster at lower right, leaving a calm stretch of violet water between. Through that gap run vertical strokes of green and mauve, reflections of trees standing out of frame. Each pad is a short, loaded dab standing slightly proud.
