About this painting

Snow-covered peaks shadowed in violet-blue rise behind a still alpine lake, and the firs on its right-hand headland hang upside down in the water as clear reflections.

The left foreground is the warmest part of the picture: a worn path runs past grey boulders through ochre and olive grass to the shore, giving the eye a way in. A hazy sun at upper right turns the clouds pale yellow. Detail is finer than in a typical loose landscape, with individual fir branches and rocks described, yet the sky and grasses are built from thicker, broken strokes.
