About this painting

Violet-blue peaks rise out of drifting mist on the left, and a pale turquoise lake opens below them, lit from behind by a band of gold along the central ridge. Most of the right half is soft lilac and white cloud with almost nothing in it, which gives the picture its height and air.

Warmer ground anchors the lower left in ochre and rust slopes, loosely dragged. Along the bottom right, dark blue crags flicked with white hold the edge, and a single small pine stands on a rock at the water. The brushwork is soft and blended overall, with crisper marks kept for the rocks and snow.
