About this painting

Two full pink peonies and a half-open bud climb a tall, narrow canvas, their ruffled petals deepening from blush at the edges to rose and crimson around golden-yellow centres. The larger bloom sits low on a bed of leaves beaded with tiny painted dewdrops, the second floats at mid-height, and the bud tips out at upper right on its own stem, with a third flower half hidden at the left edge.

Nearly half the panel above them is open ground, a pale wash of cream, lilac and faint lemon. Petals are built in fine, smooth layers with crisp serrated edges on a flat surface.

Why is the top half of HA#034 left almost empty?

To give the flowers height. The blooms sit in the lower half and the bud reaches upward, so the lilac-and-cream wash above reads as air and light rather than unused canvas. On a narrow wall that space also keeps the panel from looking crowded when seen from close range.

Are the small white dots on the leaves of HA#034 dewdrops?

Yes. Tiny beads of water are picked out in white along the leaves under the largest peony, each with its own highlight. They only show within a metre or two, a small reward for someone standing beside the painting in a corridor or next to a bed.
