About this painting

One peony opens wide high on the left, its outer petals magenta and rose, its inner ring nearly white and its heart a burst of yellow and orange stamens. The bloom is built from thick, curling strokes, each petal a single loaded sweep that leaves a ridge along its edge.

Around it the leaves are painted fast and broad in mid green, bottle green and a few blades of navy that cut across below the flower. The upper right is left as a lighter sage haze, the lower half dense and dark, so the peony stays the brightest and most built-up thing on the canvas.

Each petal is laid with a heavily loaded brush in one curving pass, so paint piles up where the stroke ends. Those ridges catch light along the outer magenta petals and around the yellow centre, while the leaves are flatter, which makes the flower feel closer than the foliage.
