About this painting

A mosaic trunk climbs from the lower edge and divides into dozens of coiling branches that reach nearly from side to side, each curl ending in a tight spiral of gold, maroon or teal. Its trunk is pieced from small ochre, red, orange and green blocks like inlaid tiles, and discs of gold, plum and violet hang among the curls like fruit.

Behind, cream and pale grey fans open upwards like feathers, threaded with fine dark lines, while pink dots soften both outer edges. The surface is flat and minutely worked, its richness coming from pattern and dense colour, with the deepest maroon at the heart of the crown.
