About this painting

A lotus leaf seen from underneath fills the upper right corner, its centre glowing saffron and gold where the veins gather at the stem. Raised veins radiate to a ragged, ochre-tipped edge, and the paint between them is crinkled so it glints as you move.

Below, a slate-grey pad spreads its own fan of veins in a frosty, feathered texture, and a small dried seed head on a thin stalk stands alone at the left. The background is a plain silver mist. A sliver of it shows through a notch at the top of the leaf, so the gold never becomes one solid mass.

Why is the lotus leaf in TA#607 painted from below?

Looking up at the leaf lets light shine through it, so the veins become the drawing and the centre turns saffron gold. It is a less familiar view than the usual blossom-on-water scene, and it makes the leaf read almost like a parasol or a sunburst against the pale sky.

Is there a lotus flower anywhere in TA#607?
