About this painting

A drift of crusted gold sweeps over the top half from the right-hand corner, burning to rust and copper at its far edge and breaking into flakes and specks as it fades towards the left.

Below it the paint turns cool: powder blue and chalky white laid in long, ridged knife strokes that run diagonally down to the lower right, like the edge of a tide. Gold reappears in small chips caught on those ridges, tying the two halves together, while the top left corner is left as almost bare ivory.
