Majlis wall decor and villa art in Saudi Arabia, room by room

iHomeArt paints original canvases by hand and to order for villas, apartments and majlis rooms in Riyadh, Jeddah and across Saudi Arabia, each sized to its wall and mixed to the colours of its room. This guide to majlis wall decor walks through a Saudi house as a guest does, from the men's majlis to the family hall, and says what suits each wall.

What majlis wall decor suits the men's majlis?

One wide, calm canvas or a run of matched panels above the sofa backs, in landscape, abstraction, geometry or calligraphy, hung for guests who are sitting down.

The men's majlis is where a Saudi house receives its guests. A Riyadh design studio describes seating round the room's edges with the centre left open, on sofas 30–40 cm high that keep the low eye line of the old floor cushions. Guests see the wall from a seat across the room, so hang the painting a little above the sofa backs, lower than gallery height, and let it run with the seating: one panoramic canvas, or two or three panels spaced to the sofa sections.

Today's Riyadh majlis is often quiet in itself. A 2026 villa-design guide describes one in raw limestone plaster with single-tone seating, and Eva Interiors' villa in Hittin works in sand, cream, terracotta and gold. Against such walls, a textured canvas in the same earth tones adds depth without shouting. Textiles are what distinguish the Saudi majlis, an architect writes in Sayidaty, so let the cushions and carpets carry the pattern. Landscape, abstraction, geometry and calligraphy suit every guest; for a verse, start from a calligrapher's own artwork and have a native reader check the stage photographs. See taste and styles in Saudi Arabia and, for widths, the Saudi size guide.

What fills the entrance hall, the bahw and the corridor to the majlis?

A tall vertical canvas or a stacked pair where the hall rises through two floors, and a quieter piece on the approach to the majlis door, the first wall every guest walks past.

Many Saudi villas open on to a hall open to the floor above, which Riyadh listings call the bahw. With two floors of 2.70–3.50 m net allowed under the villa rules, that void rises six metres or more, and it is no longer only for large plots: a 240 m² villa in East Riyadh was listed in 2026 as 'double height'. A painting sized for a sofa looks lost there. A tall vertical, or two canvases stacked as one composition, answers the height; hang it where it is seen from the door and again from the stair.

The same studio recommends a corridor of 3–4 m between the entrance and the majlis door; a narrower vertical there prepares guests for the room without competing with it. In both places calm beats busy colour: textured relief in black and white, or gold on a quiet ground. See tall vertical works, or send us a void taller than any stock canvas and we suggest the size and format that will hold it.

What hangs in the maqlat, the formal dining room?

One long horizontal painting on the wall the diners face, hung a little lower than in a hall, in warm colours that hold up under evening light.

The maqlat is often a room of its own: Riyadh listings pair a men's majlis and maqlat with a separate women's majlis, and one villa in Al Arid lists a dining room that seats 32. Everyone at the table is seated, so the painting belongs on the long wall most chairs face, centred lower than in a corridor, its width following the table rather than the whole wall.

One large piece usually serves a dining room better than a group: the Riyadh designer Nebras Aljoaib built her townhouse dining room around a large Japanese byōbu screen that 'became both art and architecture'. A long meal under lamplight favours warm palettes, dune and mountain landscapes, and gold that catches the light. See art for dining rooms.

How should wall decor in the women's majlis differ from the men's?

It can carry more colour and more of the household's own taste: florals, jewel tones and gestural abstraction on a calm base.

Most Saudi houses keep a sitting room for women as well as one for men; in one housing survey, 77% of respondents wanted both. In Eva Interiors' Hittin villa, the ladies' majlis is reached from the family entrance, 'open and connected to the rest of the home, yet distinct in its own identity', with a floral feature wall in cast gypsum. In a Riyadh residence by Yasmin Alsdais, a majlis is hung like a gallery with jewel tones and gestural paintings, on a minimal, calm base that lets the art carry the colour.

This is the room for the florals and saturated colour the men's majlis rarely takes. A 2026 Riyadh villa guide reports bright accents inspired by 'Wild Blooms'; a large floral, or an abstract in emerald, sapphire and gold, carries that against a cream wall. If the room has a decorative feature wall of its own, hang the painting on the wall opposite. See floral and botanical works.

What suits the family hall and the bedrooms upstairs?

The paintings the family lives with every day: larger than you might expect in the family hall, calm over the bed, and personal in subject.

The family hall is where a Saudi household actually lives, and it is often bigger than a European living room. Five Jeddah villa living rooms measured for one study were 6–7 m wide and 8–13 m long under 3–4 m ceilings, and held paintings of historical and natural subjects and floral panels. From a sofa six metres away a 120 cm canvas looks small; 180 cm or more, or a pair, holds the wall.

Upstairs the choice is the family's own. Households that hang figures keep them here: Nojoud Alrumaihi's Riyadh villa has a gallery wall of faceless figures by the Saudi artist Ethar Balkhair. Over the bed, choose something calm, about two-thirds of the bed's width. The most personal pieces start from your own photographs. 'In Riyadh we don't have views,' Prince Sultan bin Fahad said of his courtyard house, 'so we wanted to create our own views'. The family farm or the old house in Al-Balad can be painted the same way; see paintings from your own image.

What suits the basement hall and the heritage majlis?

Warmer, bolder work than the floors above: Najdi geometry, clay reds and gold, at a scale that fills long walls lit only by lamps.

The basement is often the largest floor in the house: the villa rules let it cover the whole plot, at a net height of at least 2.70 m. Families use it for long evenings, like the large hall, library and 'heritage majlis' under the Al Rabi villa. With little daylight, pale and subtle pieces fade into the walls, so saturated colour earns its place here.

A heritage majlis has its own vocabulary. Traditional Najdi rooms carried star-shaped and geometric patterns carved into the wall plaster, and the Najdi triangle now appears 'everywhere' in Riyadh, from walls to metro seats. Geometric work in clay, red and gold, or a textured piece with the weight of carved plaster, sits there as if it had always belonged to the house. See geometric works and textured paintings.

What changes in a new community villa, an apartment or a compound home?

The rooms are smaller but the order is the same, so one well-sized canvas per room does the work of a villa set, and the majlis still comes first.

Saudi Arabia is building family homes at scale: ROSHN plans more than 30,000 at SEDRA in Riyadh and more than 18,000 at ALAROUS in Jeddah, and home ownership among Saudi families passed 66% in 2025. A home you own deserves paintings made for its walls. The new villas keep the majlis at the front: in SEDRA's VL4 it is a room of nearly 26 m², so its longest wall is about five metres, and one canvas of 120–180 cm, or a pair, holds it.

Apartments follow the same logic. Riyadh's luxury apartments run to about 130–339 m², villa-length walls under ordinary ceilings, so favour wide formats over tall ones. Jeddah's beachfront apartments in Al Shati, 428–586 m² with Red Sea views, already have the sea in the window: give the inner wall a calm seascape or a soft abstract. Compound villas rented to expatriates in Riyadh run roughly 160–300 m², and a stretched canvas moves with you when you leave. More on homes in Riyadh and Jeddah.

How do you order wall art for a whole Saudi villa from iHomeArt?

Photograph every wall you want to fill, with its width and the ceiling height, and send them on WhatsApp; we propose a size and a shortlist for each room, paint one canvas first if you like, and label every piece for its wall.

Plan the house as the three groups of walls below, starting with the guest side so it is ready for your first gathering. We reply, usually within one business day, with a size for each wall and a shortlist from some 1,300 catalogue designs, or a piece designed for the house to your budget. Send the stone, fabric or paint of each room photographed in daylight and the palette is mixed to it; one design can be varied into a series, so the guest rooms read as one house. Ten pieces or more reach volume pricing.

Stage photographs go straight to whoever in the family is choosing, and each stage starts only once they approve. Every canvas is labelled with its room and position on a packing list, and its code is kept on file for a matching piece later. Designers can start from art for residential interior designers; the country overview is our Saudi Arabia wall art guide.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

Saudi majlis wall decor FAQs

What painting suits the majlis for National Day or Founding Day?

A landmark or a landscape rather than the flag. An architect writing in Sayidaty suggests paintings of the Kingdom's landmarks for the majlis at National Day; the flag carries the shahada and is not normally used on decorative items. Diriyah's mud-brick walls, the rock of AlUla or your own view of the Corniche, painted from a photograph, can stay up all year.

What is the largest painting you can make for a majlis or a stair void?

Send us a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and how the piece will reach the room, by door, stair or lift.

Can you paint a horse or a family portrait for a private room?

Yes, from your own photograph, for the rooms where your household chooses to hang them. Many families keep the majlis to landscape, abstraction and calligraphy and hang portraits and animals in the family hall or a bedroom; we paint either. Send the photo with the wall size and we suggest the size and finish; you need to own the image or have permission to use it.

How long does a painting take to reach Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam?

About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam or any other address in the Kingdom. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.

Can I order one painting first, before planning the whole villa?

Yes. The minimum order is one piece, so you can start with the men's majlis: we paint one canvas, you approve it from the stage photographs, and the rest of the house follows in the same hand and palette. Ten pieces or more ordered together reach volume pricing, and each wall still gets its own size and finish.
