Wall art size guide for Saudi rooms, in centimetres and inches

iHomeArt paints canvases by hand and to order for Saudi homes, offices and hotels, at the size each wall needs, from a majlis in Riyadh to a stair void in Jeddah. This wall art size guide turns Saudi rooms into canvas sizes in centimetres and inches, starting with the room most charts get wrong: the majlis, where guests see the painting sitting down, under villa ceilings of 2.7 to 3.5 metres.

What does a standard wall art size guide miss in a Saudi majlis?

The seating: guests sit along every wall and see the painting from the sofa opposite, so you size it from the seating below it and hang it from the sofa backs, not from standing eye level.

Most size charts assume one sofa, one wall and a viewer standing up. In a Saudi majlis, seating runs round the room with the centre left open, so every wall has guests beneath it and the painting is seen from across the room, sitting down. One 2026 plan for a large 24-seat majlis gives sofa backs about 121 cm high, a 4.2 m wall behind the host and side walls of 7.4 m; a new community villa in Riyadh has a majlis of nearly 26 m², about five metres a side.

  • Width: about two-thirds of the seating below. Over a 3 m sofa, 180–200 cm (71–79 in); along a long side wall, one panoramic of 2.5–3 m (98–118 in) centred on the run, or one piece per sofa section.
  • Position: the lower edge 15–25 cm (6–10 in) above the sofa backs, which with 121 cm backs is about 136–146 cm (54–57 in) from the floor, higher than most people expect.
  • Height: set by the wall left above that line; see the next section.

Give the main piece to the wall behind the host's seat, which every guest faces, and quieter work in the same palette to the side walls. See panoramic wall art.

How tall should the canvas be under a 2.7, 3.2 or 4-metre ceiling?

Between half and two-thirds of the wall left above the furniture: about 80–100 cm tall under a 2.7 m ceiling, 100–140 cm under 3.2 m, and 150–180 cm under 4 m or more.

Saudi villa rules allow a net height of 2.70 to 3.50 m on each floor; premium new villas in Riyadh's Sedra are marketed with ceilings of up to 3.2 m. Of five Jeddah villa living rooms measured for a doctoral study, one had a 4 m ceiling and the others 3 m. That height is why a canvas chosen in a showroom often looks short at home. Leave at least 30–40 cm (12–16 in) of plain wall below the ceiling or cornice, and more under a carved gypsum cornice or a large chandelier.

What painting size suits the maqlat and the family hall?

Wide in both: in the maqlat, a panoramic about two-thirds the length of the table, or a run of three; in the family hall, 180–250 cm across, because it is seen from six or seven metres away.

Riyadh villa listings divide the ground floor into men's and women's majlis, the maqlat for formal dining and the family hall. The maqlat often has the longest wall in the house: one North Riyadh villa lists a dining room seating 32, a table of eight metres or more. Hang a panoramic of 250–400 cm (98–157 in), or three panels 5–8 cm (2–3 in) apart, along the long wall, with the lower edge 20–30 cm (8–12 in) clear of the chair backs.

Five Jeddah villa living rooms measured 6–7 m across and 8–13 m long, so the family sofa sits six or seven metres from the wall opposite; at that distance a canvas needs 180–250 cm (71–98 in) of width to hold the wall. Give the long wall one large piece and the end walls smaller work in the same palette. More for dining rooms and living rooms.

Which size and format suit a double-height entrance or stair void?

A tall vertical of about 120–150 cm by 200–300 cm, or a stacked pair, hung so it reads from the front door and from the stair.

Riyadh villa listings describe a hall open to the floor above, and agents in Al Malqa advertise majlis rooms and family halls as double height. Two floors of 2.70–3.50 m, plus the slab between them, make a void of roughly six to seven and a half metres, often the one wall in the house where a canvas taller than it is wide sits in proportion.

For a void of six metres or more, choose 120–150 cm (47–59 in) wide by 200–300 cm (79–118 in) tall, or two canvases stacked 10–15 cm (4–6 in) apart, with the lower edge about 100–120 cm (39–47 in) above the floor. On a wall that follows the stair, keep the middle of the canvas about 150–160 cm (59–63 in) above the step below it. See vertical wall art and oversized wall art.

What painting size goes above a king bed, or over the sofa in an apartment?

Over a king bed, about two-thirds of its width, 120–140 cm (47–55 in), hung 20–30 cm above the headboard; in an apartment, 100–150 cm over the sofa, or a pair.

A bedroom is sized from the bed. A king bed of 180–200 cm takes a canvas 120–140 cm (47–55 in) wide and up to 80–100 cm (31–39 in) tall, or two verticals of 50–60 cm (20–24 in) each. Or treat the whole wall as a headwall: in The Collector, a 2025 Riyadh home, designer Nebras Aljoaib uses a 19th-century Coromandel screen as the headwall to give the room scale, and a canvas spanning the bed and both side tables does the same.

Apartments housed almost 43% of Saudi households in a 2021 study, villas just over 28%, and even the luxury apartments listed in Riyadh in 2026 run to only 130–339 m². Their walls are shorter, so 100–150 cm (39–59 in) over the sofa, or a vertical 80–100 cm (31–39 in) wide on a narrow wall, keeps the room in proportion. See art for bedrooms.

One large canvas, or two or three panels?

One canvas where the wall is unbroken and the way into the room allows it; panels where pilasters, windows or doors divide the wall, or where a single canvas could not pass the door, stair or lift.

Saudi reception rooms are often divided before the art arrives. The large-majlis plan above sets gilded pilasters at 1.8 m centres: a canvas then fits one bay, at about 120–140 cm (47–55 in), or spans two as a panoramic of 300 cm (118 in) or more. A carved feature wall, like the cast-gypsum floral wall of a ladies' majlis in Riyadh's Hittin district, already holds the room, so give the painting another wall.

Panels also solve the way in. New premium villas in Riyadh's Sedra come with a lift inside the house, and a stretched canvas cannot bend round a landing or into a small lift car. Three canvases of 100 × 150 cm (39 × 59 in), hung 5–8 cm apart, cover about 3.1 m, each easy to carry; painted as one composition, the lines and colours run across the breaks.

How does a 3-metre painting reach a villa in Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam?

Usually rolled in a tube, or stretched and ready to hang if it fits the way in; heavily textured or plaster work travels stretched or framed, and very large or many pieces can go by air or sea freight.

DHL's Saudi express guide accepts pieces up to 120 × 80 × 80 cm and counts anything with one side over 100 cm as oversize.

Stretched and framed pieces arrive ready to hang, and are how 3D plaster and heavy palette-knife texture always travel. Size those against the route as well as the wall: measure the front door, the stair turn and the lift car, and choose panels if one canvas will not pass. We find the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before dispatch. See textured paintings.

  • Rolled

Lightest and most economical at any size; it travels without stretcher bars.

  • Stretched

Ready to hang on arrival; size it to pass the door, the stair and the lift.

  • Framed

Gold, silver, black, white or wood, ready to hang. Plaster and heavy texture travel framed or stretched.

Hotel lobbies go further: W Riyadh's is anchored by a six-metre tapestry by Abdulnasser Gharem. When your wall falls between two rows, take the larger size. More on office wall art in Saudi Arabia and Saudi hotels and restaurants.

How do you measure a wall and get the right size from iHomeArt?

Photograph the wall straight on and send it with five numbers: the wall's width, the ceiling height, the height of the furniture below, the distance to the seat opposite and the smallest door or lift it must pass.

Measure the built wall with a tape rather than reading it off the plan: a canvas painted to order is painted to the numbers you send. Then send the photo and the numbers on WhatsApp, with the quote form or by email.

We suggest a size in centimetres and inches, a format, whether it should travel rolled, stretched or framed, and a shortlist from some 1,300 catalogue designs, or we design a piece for your project. Any design can be resized to your wall, recoloured to your fabric or stone, or painted from your own image: see paintings from your own image. For a whole villa, plan every wall at once; the rooms themselves are on villas and majlis in Saudi Arabia, and the wider picture in the Saudi wall art guide.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

Wall art size guide for Saudi Arabia FAQs

Can a catalogue painting be made wider, taller or in a different shape for my wall?

Yes. Any design can be painted at the size your wall needs. When the proportion changes, from a vertical to a panoramic for a majlis, say, the composition is redrawn for the new shape rather than stretched, and you approve it in the stage photographs before painting moves on.

Are your sizes for the canvas or for the frame?

Sizes are for the painted canvas. A frame adds the width of its moulding on every side, so if you have measured the outside of a frame, tell us and we work the canvas size back from it. Frames come in gold, silver, black, white or wood.

How can I test a painting size on my wall before ordering?

Mark the outline with masking tape, or pin up paper cut to full size, and look at it from where you usually sit: in a majlis, from the sofa opposite, not the doorway. If it looks a little large, it is usually right. Send us a photo of the test and we suggest the final size.

Can one canvas cover a whole majlis wall?

Send us a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and the way in, by door, stair or lift.

What size should Arabic calligraphy be for a majlis wall?

Size it like any majlis piece, about two-thirds of the seating below, but let the text set the shape: a single word or name suits a square or tall canvas, a line of verse a long horizontal. Send a calligrapher's artwork, used with their permission, and we suggest the size and finish; ask a native reader to check the stage photographs.

Should every painting in a villa be the same size?

No, but they should share a logic: size each piece to its own wall, then keep the palette, the frame or the height of the lower edge the same across the guest rooms. Ten pieces or more reach volume pricing, and each canvas is labelled by room for hanging.
