About this painting

Ivory folds overlap like the petals of a huge opened flower, each curved surface hatched with hundreds of fine dark lines that follow its contour.

The lines bunch where a fold turns away and spread where it faces forward, so they act as shading and exaggerate the depth of the relief. A warm gold-tan shadow collects in the creases. The upper half is dense, folds stacked over folds, with one bold black curve crossing the centre right; lower down the forms open into smoother sweeps of cream. Beyond ivory, taupe, gold and that fine black line there is no other colour.

Does TA#374 depict a flower?

Not literally. The overlapping folds open outwards like petals, which is why many people see a bloom, but they can just as easily read as draped silk or the contour lines of a hill map. It is abstract, and its real subject is the movement of the lines.

How does TA#374 sit in a mostly grey room?

Comfortably, because its only warm notes are the gold-tan shadows in the creases. Against grey panelling those read as a gentle warmth, and the black contour lines echo dark metal hardware or trim. Stark cool-white walls are less kind: next to them the ivory can look yellowed.
