About this painting

Smooth white ribbons of plaster curl, fold and overlap across a square canvas, enclosing rounded hollows like pools left in a riverbed after the water has drained away.

The relief is deep: each ribbon has a clean, rounded lip standing well off the ground, and inside the hollows the surface steps down in shallower terraces, much like the contour lines of a map. Two small oval pockets near the centre left are the tightest forms on the surface. A warm sand ground shows at the top and lower left, so the white never looks stark.
