Four bands of contrasting texture slant across the canvas, each one dropping toward the lower right corner: combed cream ridges, a pitted black seam, a rust-brown stream and a broken white crust.

Each band is worked differently. The cream at the top right is pulled into close, wave-like grooves; the black is nubbly and granular, like volcanic rock; the brown is dragged with fine parallel striations, almost a wood grain; and the white below is stippled and cratered, edged by a thread of ochre where it meets the brown. A flat black corner at the lower left closes the sequence.
