About this painting

A strip of turquoise sea meets a broad band of white surf, and beyond it a pale cream beach is dotted with dozens of tiny umbrellas in pink, green, cobalt, orange and yellow, all seen from high above.

The surf carries the heaviest paint, white heaped and dragged in a diagonal ridge from top to bottom and breaking into lace where it reaches the sand. The water deepens from jade at the shoreline to dark teal at the left edge. Umbrellas crowd the middle of the beach and thin out to the right, leaving open sand.

Are there people in TA#941, or only umbrellas?

Both. Two small swimmers float in the turquoise water at left, and tiny dark flecks between the umbrellas suggest people on the sand. Up close they make the beach feel busy and alive; further back they merge into texture, so the canvas never looks cluttered.

Why does the sea in TA#941 change colour from left to right?
