About this painting

A flowering prickly pear stands in pale desert sand under a night sky that churns in thick blue spirals, with a big yellow moon burning in the top right corner. Five open blooms in yellow and peach are built up petal by petal so they stand off the green pads, and coral buds tip almost every pad.

The sky follows the swirling strokes and haloed stars of post-impressionist night scenes, worked in ultramarine, turquoise and white. The pads are sculpted thick with fine rust-coloured spines drawn over them, and a strip of rust-red earth along the bottom edge warms the base of the plant.
