About this painting

Four feathers fan across a long cream ground, each in its own colour: a short rounded plume banded in sky blue and gold, a taupe-brown feather with a fine gold spine, a cobalt feather with a ragged, windblown tip, and a pale silver-gray one fading into the background on the right.

Gold-toned lines trace every quill and edge, and gold flecks scatter across the mottled white field, thickest in the corners. The two blue feathers are the strongest notes, so the row moves from saturated colour on the left towards almost white at the right.
